1986 cougar posi question Reply #1 – December 07, 2012, 10:08:55 PM I believe it does.....my 84 did. What are you plans for the car? The reason I ask is, it may be just as cheap to put a 8.8 in with 3.73s....they're easy to find. Quote Selected
1986 cougar posi question Reply #2 – December 08, 2012, 08:06:20 AM I spend a lot of time on the freeway, and in that scenario, I wish I had gone with 3.55 or 3.27. Around town, however, I have full love for my 3.73. When I go 5-Lug, it's going to be a late 8.8 w/3.55 and disc brakes. Quote Selected
1986 cougar posi question Reply #3 – December 08, 2012, 08:36:04 AM If you've got the AOD, I'd recommend the 3.73 ratio, with a good convertor, it'll get a porky car off to a quicker jump...with a T5 though, I'd go no more than 3.55, otherwise first gear gets useless fast, unless you have a big tire out back. But don't take my word for it, just everyone who has modded their cars seems to agree the AOD cars like a little more rear gear. Also, what gear will MOST of your driving be in? Keep in mind, you'll also need to change your speedo driven gear (in the trans, easy to do) to keep your speedo accurate... Quote Selected
1986 cougar posi question Reply #4 – December 08, 2012, 09:12:03 AM Just for the record the AUTO TC came with 3.73 from the factory. Just saying. Heavy car low torque engine bigger final drive. The difference between 3.5 & 3.7 is miniscule. I normally recommend 3.73. Just me could be wrongA4 LD. Quote Selected
1986 cougar posi question Reply #5 – December 08, 2012, 09:22:47 AM I like my 3.55's a lot. I also have a 3.73 rear in the garage collecting dust. Quote Selected
1986 cougar posi question Reply #6 – December 08, 2012, 10:42:47 AM Personaly I love my 4.10s (srarted with 3.73s)even with the useless 3.27 first gear. This car is built for fun and some hiway driving. Gear is cheap HP and if you do the math, 4.10x.68 = roughly a 2.73s.Like was mentioned earlier, to each their own. I don't plan on putting on more than 3000 miles a year, even at 24+mpg. Quote Selected

1986 cougar posi question Reply #10 – December 20, 2012, 11:52:21 PM I've got 3.73 gears in my T-bird. With the stock converter it turned about 2400rpm on the highway. With the non-lock-up PI Stallion converter I have now it turns about 2800-2900 rpm at 70 mph. It's a bit louder/uses more gas but it's a hell of a lot more fun. There's nothing like nailing the throttle at 70 mph and having the car rear up, snort, throw you back in the seat, and shoot ahead like it was kicked in the ass:D. Quote Selected
