Biggest tire?

Rounded up a pair of 15x8" Weld Pro Star knock offs for the back of the bird.  They have 4.5" backspace.  I'd like to go with a 255 or larger tire.

I am told that the largest tire one can fit in the rear, without shortening the axle or installing mini-tubs is 310 on a 18x10.5 wheel, using 40mm backspacing.  I read this on CC, so it is likely to be very accurate.

Alan, 83-88tbirdguy, the one with the 2 460 birds is running 325/50/15's 6.5 b/s and the wheel fits in the wheel well.

Back space is more an issue than tire size.  Our wheel wells are pretty large, allowing fitment of 325's with little to no hammering on the wheel wells with proper back spacing (I have 315's on a 10.5" rim with 6.8" backspace).

A 4.5" back space may push the tire outboard. close to the fender lip, limiting tire size.

Get out the staight edge and ruler and do some measurements.  It's the only way to tell what fits before you buy!

Are the wheel wells different between the 83-88 cars?  I always thought that the 83-86 would be the same and 87-88 would be different but I am not sure one way or the other.

I've got a couple "nearly shot" 275/60's laying around.  Going to mount one Wed and see how it looks.  Wanted 5.5" b/s but could pass on this deal.
