New tires

So I need to get some new tires for my bird (87 tc) soon. If I'm short for cash I'm going to get tires to fit the stock wheels, but if i have enough $$ i want to get new wheels too. What's a good wheel company? I like the look of the American Racing VN405 wheels but not the pricetag! In other words, I like the style of those wheels but is there anything decent like that in the $100-$150/ea range? Also, I need an opinion on lower profile tires, I like the look of a lower profile tire on these birds! Or would it be logically best to get the standard tire for this car?

I am running 16" "snowflakes" shod with 225x60 in front and 235x60 in back. I lowered the suspension by 1" and I think the handling is pretty good for a "poorman's" project. I picked up the rims for $75, and a TC hood for $50. I did have to get the center caps for the rims, but that was actually easy.

If these are the VN405's you are talking about:

Then they are very similiar to the Bullitt wheels.  Wheel Replicas sells just about every variance of stock wheel that came on the Mustangs as well as some others and the price per wheel is pretty good.

sweet! I want to keep my suspension the same and same size wheels all the way around so i can actually rotate my wheels! I'd still like to keep a relatively same width on the tire...what differences does it make going slightly wider? I'd like to keep the same height tire/wheel (15 right?) but yeah...lower profile tire.  I can't speak tire well I haven't worked with tires except rotating!

The factory tires on your car were 225/60/16's.  The 87-90 Mustangs ran 225/60/15's and the 91-93 Mustangs ran 225/55/16's.  If you want to keep the same tire height then you need to look for a tire that is the same as what came stock on your car.  If your car still has the factory 16's then you want the 225/60/16's of which there is a decent selection.  If you want to go wider then you will need to find a tire that has the same overall height and roll out which will keep your speedo correct.  Problem is there is not much selection in a 16" wheel that will get you close.  225/60/16 = 26.7" wheel height, 235/55/16 = 26.1" wheel height, 245/50/16 = 25.7" wheel height, etc.  If you want to go wider than stock with the limited selection of 16" tires you will most likely have to change the speedo gear on the speedo cable to correct your speedo reading.  I would not go any wider than a 245 on your stock wheel as it will balloon the center and wear out the center of the tread faster than the outer tread.
