Thats pretty impressive^. I figeured the XR7s or TCs would need a lot more work to break 12s.

'It didn't happen over night.  But with lots of boost (27psi from the stock turbo)  The XR7 made pretty good power.  It was pretty easy to launch.  Lots of 1.7's 60' which really help getting into the low 13's and 12.96.  I figured it made 275 rwhp.  Not bad from stock stuff.  Think about it.  At 9psi(stock for 86 auto 2.3turbo it made 120rwhp)  I had a pretty good methanol injection, intercooler, drag radials, and wideband so I could tune with the limited options I had back then....ie boost, timing, fuel pressure.  It made decent power....but a one trick cat...ie WOT.  I couldn't have over 5 psi or I had knock.  I ran the car with lots of base timing.  IIRC 15.  The 2.3T is a great engine to make good power from fairly cheaply.  I wanted 11's in my fat cat.  That wasn't going to be easy.  Hence the 351 turbo swap.
