Not a Turbo 2.3L But my NA 2.3L Mustang has a little prob, help me out please...

Ok so the 85 Coupe with its little 2.3L wont Idle. Can someone please tell me what this sensor is hanging off the side of the carb and if it could keep the car from idling?

Sometimes it will Idle really high for a few seconds but then it always dies. :(

The car does not alter the way it runs weather it is plugged in or not.

I looks like an Idle air control valve. I didn't know they put them on carbs. I dont really know for sure.

yep, that seems to be an IAC valve.. i imagine on a carb, it messes with timing.. pull it off and try cleaning it out really good, that seems to be the fault with a lot of them

From the 84 Shop Manual:
"This solenoid assembly is an integral part of the YFA feed back carburetors."

"In a feedback system, it operates as a pulse width modulated (dithering) solenoid, varying the air bled into the idle and main fuel metering circuits, in response to commands from the MCU or EEC, thereby varying the fuel/air ratio delivered to the engine."

Pull the codes.

Last one of those carbs I messed with did same, no idle... Problem was a small piece of trash in one of the idle circuit passages, took a rebuild to find it...

Well that might be the route I have to go. But the carb was rebuilt a year or so ago. Could this "solenoid" make the car not Idle at all?

This carb is controlled by the EEC IV computer. So pulling the computer codes is the best place to start.
Can you tell if the plunger on the idle speed control motor ever moves?

You probably don't have a check engine light.
Use an buttstuffog meter or a test light. It will take some practice to get your brain in sync with the pulses, so don't get frustrated. Just keep doing it over until you get it.
Hook your meter or test light up first.
Turn the key on.
The KOEO (Key on engine off) tests will start running when you jumper STI to signal return.
It will give two digit codes and give the codes twice.
There are two groups of codes.
On demand codes. What the self test is finding, will present first
Continuous memory codes will present second.
The digit codes are 1/2 second on and 1/2 second off.
There is 4 seconds off between codes.
There is a 6 to 9 second off before and after a single seperator pulse between the on demand codes and the continuous memory codes.

in simple terms, probe the connectors in the diagram he posted and watch the test light, it will flash.. count the flashes and that'll give you your codes

Not 100% sure but I don't think the FBC solenoid will have a major effect on idle... Some of the earlier carbs had a fuel shut off solenoid the prevent dieseling and would kill the idle circuit if it was bad or didn't have power... I had a Escort that wouldn't idle due to a blown fuse...
