2.3 crank seal cover install

I had an oil leak from the front of the oil pan.  I removed the front crank seal cover and now can't reinstall it without damaging the crank seal.  Do I have to install the cover first then the crank seal?  I've seen a alignment tool but my problem is the oil pan seal does not have the clearance to fully slide in.  Any experience in this frustrating deal would be helpful.

Thank in advance,

Gary

You can install the seal after the front cover is installed. Not sure how you would damage the crank seal.  It's meant to be installed after the cover is in place.
Do you still have the oil pan installed and tight around the rest of the block?  If so, that's why things won't install properly.  The oil pan installs after the front cover.

If you don't have the alignment tool, the best you can do is install the seal into the front cover and make you best judgment on whether it's centered or not.  The oil pan MUST be loose and not interfering to do this.

Thanks for the replies.  I was really hoping not to partially drop the oil pan.  Looks like I have to remove the starter to access the right side bolts.  The seal is already installed to the cover so my options are limited.  What a PITA.
