ATF is what is originally called for.  But if the tolerances are bad, it will be noisy.  That is probably why someone put gear oil in it... To keep it quiet.

I have heard of success using some high-end synthetic ATF's, but you might do some research.

Yeah its used also!!! But how used is the question??? I read in chiltons if i live in warm climate that gear-oil would suffice,as long as temps didnt get to cold. but ya thanks for info..

If it's an 84 T5, it's a NON-World Class, and will need the gear oil.

All World Class T5 trans use ATF...

I have my doubts about the info on that link as to 1984 being an absolute cut off / change over  for gear oil/ world class Trannys .
I worked  as a tech for a Ford dealer in the 80's and I know with 100% certainty that some 83 and 84 Mustangs and Turbo Coupes  came off the truck from Ford with ATF in the transmissions .

I should note I did the dealer preps on quite a few cars , so I am stating first hand  knowledge .

ALL World Class T-5 use ATF (Dextron III) oil and NOT heavy gear oil or Redline MTL!  All NON-World Class T-5 use 50 wt gear oil. (The original Ford/Borg-Warner recommendation back in 1984 was Dextron II.  As this is no longer available, we and TREMEC recommend the 50 wt gear oil.)  We recommend high quality Synthetic oil as it lasts a long time and over a larger operating temperature.  It is important to change the oil in your transmission based on how you use the vehicle.  If the vehicle is your daily driver then changing the oil every two to three years is fine
