how important is PCV?

If I capped off the vaccuum  and use breather cap(s) on the valve cover(s),  therebye doing away with PCV system et. al. ,  can this can hurt anything in the engine?    This is my 1986 5.0 daily driver.  Actually,  i've been running it this way for a couple weeks and now having second thoughts.  It's running fine right now,  but I figured I'd ask before doing it for too long.  In case it might cause some kind of gradual damage I don't know about.

As long as the engine can vent it won't cause a problem in warm weather, in cold temps likely there will be some condensation build up...

I agree 100% and the condensation can be HEAVY on short trips and with lower than normal thermostats (180*) 

Well talking about the PCV system. Do you know they work on different vacuum levels. Example installing a big cam reduces vacuum quite a bit. So the PCV just might not seat properly when under a lower vacuum. I used to have a table of vacuum numbers that the valves seated at. But i could not find it. Normally i use an Oldsmobile valve with a 90* end. They work on reduced vacuum and work well. If your PCV valve buzzes at idle it is not seating properly and you need to either replace it with one that runs on a lower vacuum or eliminate it if possible. Most people do not pay attention to a PCV valve but it actually can be tuned and they actually have high flow ones. Only a NUT like me would research PCV valves. They are not just used for a BABY RATTLE.

Sorry to jump in. I'm running a carbed V8 and using a pcv to the bottom of the carb and a breather on the other side. Am I better off plumbing that to the bottom of the air cleaner? or does it matter

If your breather has an air filter in it, it does the same thing.

Just a FYI but you can't run a breather setup on a MAF system. The MAF system expects a closed system so if you run a breather the computer will have problems with idle control. The SD could care less as it takes the PCV system into account as a controlled vac leak.
