Yeah, I'm looking at buying a dirt bike for blasting around the logging roads at the cottage. I'm either going to get a used puppies model or a new Chinese model (which are generally cheaper than 5+ year old puppies models). It's been a long time since I've been on a dirt bike and I don't want to spend a fortune on something I'm probably either gonna wreck or lose interest in, hence the limited budget.

So while looking around for Chinese models I came across the website for Giovanni branded bikes. They seem decent enough and you can almost buy them with the change from the car's ash tray. I was stricken by the description for the actual bike. Gotta love poorly translated Chinese-English ad copy:

I am a dirt biker myself, stopped trying to kill myself in oct 1985 when I laid there on a pipe line thinking this was it for me. I literally woke up and wondered if i was dead or not.
I like riding in the woods, would prefer a way without so much noise but my feet dont get me around that quick so motor power is the only choice.
I even looked at owning my own mule but quickly got talked out of that by a farmer who started discussing all the details of keeping them healthy and what all you have to watch for if they get sick.

Good luck on the bike though,, id just look at something 4stroke street and trail. You should be able to find a running bike for 500.00 along the 200 or 250 cc range. Thats about all you would need. I dont know how your doing about the weight loss thing but a 200lb man should be ok on the sizes i mentioned. Me, i have the opposite problem so i could prob buzz around on a 125 gettn it anywhere.

Yeah, I'm thinking about something like an XL or XT 250, but this is Canada. We pay WAY too much money for everything, even though the Loonie is currently worth more than the Greenback. People are looking for $2500+ for 10 year old dirtbikes (click here for a typical local bike for sale ad, and street and trail are even more), whereas I can buy a brand new, never ridden, 2011 Chinese ripoff bike for $1800. There are a few older street and trail bikes in the local classifieds for more reasonable amounts, but they're really old (mid 80's) and really big (one's an XT 600 - click here for the ad). That's not a dirt bike, it's a friggin' tractor.

It's kinda hard to beat $1800 for this brand new out of the box (I know the photo says $1999 but it's on sale right now):

you can actually buy "actual known knock off" products?
I didnt know that was an option.

i always thought that "you thought" you bought the right brand and "they screwed you"

I have ridden dirt bikes since I was 6. 22 years now. my cousin and one of his buddies bought china bikes and they didn't even last one summer. Also very hard to get replacement parts for (like major internal parts)! Please do yourself a favor and buy a brand that has been around for years. you'll have it for years to come.you'll enjoy it and you can find parts alot more easily. Honda's & Yamaha's are always a good bet. Hope you have loads of fun no matter what you buy!

Find a cheap name brand bike. You can find a nice bike for under $1,000.

Not here you can't. I've been haunting the online classifieds for months. Anything less than 11 years old is over $2500.

Get an old KLR 250, kickstart only but it's a great street and trail bike. Kawasaki made them for 21 years (1984-2005), and the military used them quite a bit for recon.

If you want electric start then Yamaha XT225 or Suzuki DR250/350 (some have electric and some don't)
