windows not opening

I'm going to check out a car this week, current owner says the (power) windows will not open anymore. A winter ago he tried opening them to remove snow from the windows but because they were frozen shut, they wouldn't open. Ever since, the windows have stopped working though you can hear the motors running.

How likely is it to be a couple of broken motors? And if it isn't, how easy is it to fix the lifting mechanisms?
I know it's a hard to tell without actually having the car here, but I want to know about how much extra it would cost me to fix the windows.

If you hear the window motors running he probably broke the gear couplings. They are 3 little nylon plugs. Remove the door panel pull the motors and replace the plugs and away you go. There is probably some pics on here of the repair, if you use the search

It's possible he may of pulled the linkage off the windows,I would doubt that though, the window's probably fell down by now.
It's fairly easy fix and cheap enough to fix.

What year car?  Kind of useful info.

What most likely happened is that when he tried to open the frozen windows, the small dampers in the motor gears came apart (as they are designed to).  Replacement gear kits run about $10-15/per.

It's a '90 Mark VII. Don't think it'll differ a whole lot from my '88 Thunderbird, right?

I'm looking at two replacement gear kits. Both should be ok for my car. One kit is for 'Vehicles w/o Greaseable Cap' and the other is for 'Vehicles w/Greaseable Cap'. What is a greasable cap?
