Reply #61 – March 22, 2012, 12:52:54 AM she's a bit more ford than chevy as of today :) .. all i was able to get done were the rack tabs and get it bolted up.. started making a make-shift temp steering shaft with ratchet universals (yaaaay ghetto) so i can move it around, because i had to order the large u-joints and a 3/4" male hiem for the steering shaft.. they won't be in until mid next week :(don't know why i bolted the fenders on.. it just seemed like a good idea at the time lol Quote Selected

Reply #62 – March 23, 2012, 09:47:28 PM here's my temporary ghetto steering shaft.. it's mainly ghetto because i used ratchet swivels LOL i'm going to keep it like this, until the motor is in and i finish modifying the headers.. that way i don't screw up my new $70 (each) universals.. when said time comes, i'll actually remove the OEM shaft that sticks through the firewall and run my shaft all the way to the rackthe universals i ordered for the permanent shaft - my ghetto temp shaft with the hiem mounted to the frame (welded the nut to the frame, so the hiem is easily removable when it's time to pull it off to change shafts )and my other project of the day.. get the crossmember cut.. even started plating it back up Quote Selected

you're going to be scratching your head at this 1.. Reply #64 – March 25, 2012, 10:22:22 PM don't laugh too hard, i used my front sump pan (backwards) as a mock-up rear sump pan.. it's been cut and modified, but it gave me an idea of what i'm looking at.. so basically, i have to chop about an 1-1/2" off the top of the crossmember and plate it, move the rack down a smidge or 2 and i should be in good shape all around.. going to try doing so tomorrow, along with drilling/cutting the slots for the motor mount studs.. i'm going to cut little spacers out of steel and weld them to the top of the mounts, just to give myself a little extra peace of mind.. i'm figuring a 5/16" spacer should be sufficient, between the block's mounting posts and the mount itself, that way the mounts still lay flush against the frame, without any washers/spacers to gain a little extra height.. anyway, i'm doing all this with my 306, since the 408 is now on a stand at the shop, waiting for me to head down and start ripping it apart.. once i get the slots cut and the crossmember modified for height clearance, i'm going to put the heads back on with the 1-7/16" tubing sandwiched between the block/heads, so i can start fitting the headers and see what needs to be done.. i'm not going to make anything permanent, as the 1-7/16" tubing doesn't give the heads the exact height of where the 408's heads will end up.. so far, i don't think i'll have much to do, header wise Quote Selected
you're going to be scratching your head at this 1.. Reply #65 – March 27, 2012, 10:17:02 PM got the top side of the crossmember done.. i'll do the back side after i'm certain i don't need to trim anymore off.. i still have to move the rack down, but i'm going to do that with the permanent crossmember.. i'll take care of that after the 408 is in, that way i know everything will clear and i can make sure the steering won't bind.. other than that, i sat the 306 back in with the mounts and spacers in.. got all that situated and started messing with the passenger side header.. i only have to modify the #1 and #2 primaries to clear the stupid GM upper control arm setup, so right off the bat, i'm in better shape with these headers, than i would have been with the others.. so i slid 2 bolts in and spaced the head up with the 1-7/16 pipe again, but i flattened them a little to match the 9.2 deck height of the 408my hiems for the tie rods came in today, but they were shipped to the shop, so i have to run and get them.. also mounted 1 of the hoosiers on 1 of the new 15x10's.. threw it on the truck and it just kept me motivated all day lol Quote Selected
you're going to be scratching your head at this 1.. Reply #66 – March 29, 2012, 10:52:33 PM so far, everything i was told about this motor is true.. pretty pretty FRPP A351 1.6 roller rockers, correct cylinder bore to be a 408 (need to check stroke tomorrow), (what appears to be) TF pistons.. so far, all is well with this thing.. a little water in the cylinders and pan, but it doesn't seem as if it has really effected anything (yet).. the distributor is now garbage, as i had to beat the snot out of it to get it loose.. but at least it was just a stock junker and not an MSD or something of the sort..only thing i'm not happy about, are the heads.. i was never informed as to what they were.. but alas.. stock.. i believe some p-heads may be in order, depending on what that'd set the compression ratio at.. if it's going to push it to 12:1, forget it lol premium is getting too expensive Quote Selected

Should have 3 bars on the front of the heads facing the radiator. If not, there are new E7 style truck heads.Travis Quote Selected
you're going to be scratching your head at this 1.. Reply #69 – April 02, 2012, 07:48:14 PM the GT40 lightening heads have more than 1 casting number, 3 if i remember right.. the 'newer style' truck E7's still had the humps in the exhaust ports.. plus, they weren't stamped with GT and they do have the 3 bars.. pics below should show them lolso the motor's in, i re-angled the mounts, pass header is on and there's 1 slight clearance issue.. with the block.. everything else is PERFECT.. if i wanted to go the easy route, i could just dent the header or trim the piece of the block down, but i'll do it the hard/correct way, so it's all good and stuff.. (pic below of where it'shiznitting).. i also did a bit of 'test painting' on the 306 with the duplicolor paint shop 'deep blue'.. i've used the paint shop line of products before, but never straight out of the can without mixing to change the shade.. i really like it, so i'll be painting both motors with it, before they get their final drop into the frame rails.. read a few articles from a google search and apparently it holds up to the heat pretty wellhead close-upsand.. i really need to find a funnel web for the 408.. this just looks mean and it'll compliment the rest of the motor well.. don't mind the carb, though.. it's just my py 650 holley off the 306.. i just sat it on there to determine where the carb and breather would actually sit Quote Selected

Reply #72 – April 03, 2012, 11:47:46 PM almost too much.. lol and this is just for the motor.. i still have to build a tubular trans crossmember, narrow the rear frame clip, build a narrowed disk 8.8, decide on a trans, build said trans, body work, interior work, exhaust, weld up the aluminum fuel cell, etc etc.. there's still a buttload left to do Quote Selected
