serpentine belt diagram/ length?

Hi,
I have th 5.0 H.O installed in the 56 wagon now, and am in the final process of figuring out where things go. This engine is from a 91 mustang with serpentine belt. It has power steering, A/c, alternator , water pump and of course the crank pulley. The Air pump has been eliminated. The factory idler tensioner pulley is located more-or-less between the alternator and water pump.

So, can anyone point me to a diagram for the correct routing and method to determine the right length? Sure would help!

my friend was saying about removing the pollutation pump and getting i guess a smaller belt, anyone do this? what would be the belt size? thanks.

as a side note for the 3.8L,,, the belt would be 77'' with no smog

that link you posted,,, i cant quite put my finger on it but there is something wrong with it isnt there?

I never knew the belt routing was the same for the 3.8L and i guess thats whats bugging me.

also look at the pic where the belt transitions from the AC towards the tension pully. I think the drawing is off a little bit.

A 1991 Mustang 5.0 with a/c and air pump has a 91.5" belt. Eliminating the a/c compressor will leave you with an 86" belt (roughly). I am not sure about the air pump delete length. Maybe a Mustang board would have that info more readily.

I do know that after me messing with many combinations of pulleys and accessories, you can usually get a belt to work. We use a standard 6-rib serpentine belt, and a good parts store assistant can get you a belt off the shelf that will work, even if it's technically listed for a different car.

Nice find! Only problem is, I don't think the Mark VII motor uses the same a/c bracket as the Mustang 5.0. I believe the Mark VII uses the same one we have. If that is the case then he'd need an 85.5" belt, or somewhere in that neighborhood.

The T-bird and Mark look the same when I pop the hoods of the two. Could always take pics and/or measure when the rain stops. Can't help ya on the Mustang part, tho.

I know for sure the Mustang's bracket sort of rolls the a/c compressor over toward the driver's side more. Ours lets the a/c compressor lay flat. My engine in the convertible is from a '92 Mustang and I have those different brackets somewhere. Not much of a difference, but just enough to change the belt length (and make me jealous of the nicer Mustang setup).

Thanks, that diagram is exactly what I was looking for. It was also what I instinctively though would work, but it's niice to see it on the internet. After all, if it's on the internet is MUSt be true, huh?

And I should have qualified that even though the engne is a 91 Mustang, the EFI is the one from a T bird that has the intake cranked forward 45 degrees. That system seemed to be the easiest MAF to modify for a stand-alone conversion.

Now, does anyone know how to connect the alternator? It's from an 86 Mustang- There are two large wires, black with an orange tracer, that come out of the pigtail at the alternator. There are also the same combination of two wires , black with orange tracer located at the main fuse box; But how do they connect together and to the car's electrical system?

I think that was just the way it was rendered. Maybe to show what the components look like :dunno:? The routings to the right of the larger diagram are correct.

Just remember, smooth pulley = back side of belt, ribbed pulley = ribbed side of belt. :D

Dave, those two wires are the main 12v+ power wires out of the alternator. They actually tie together just after the alternator, and that wire goes over to the starter solenoid. There's a fusible link on the wire at the solenoid.
