All I wanted was my cd player back...

Maybe someone can clear this up for me...

I took the cd player out of my tc which is a non premium sound car and was wired in with a factory adaptor kit. This was in good known working condition. I hooked it up in the new bird the exact same way I had it in the tc and get power but no sound.

The stock radio has sound and I hooked it back in for now. They're both non premium sound cars and logically this should have swapped right in. Any ideas?

87 5.0, 88 TC

I'm no electrical/wiring person (my most dreaded work area) but this just seems bizarre to me. Of course trying to do it in the driveway in the dark cuz the baby is asleep probably wasn't helping...

There are no differences in radio wiring for '87 & '88...

Now just because it doesn't have a graphic EQ, doesn't mean it doesn't have the premium sound amp in the back... Need to check on the drivers side drop down panel in the trunk, amp has a foot ball looking shape and will be beside the keyless module(plastic rectangular)...

If it's there, it needs to be disconnected and then fish around behind the storage well above the radio opening for another speaker plug(usually upper right)... This second plug has a direct connection to the speakers... BTW if this is the case the premium amp MUST be disconnected or you will release smoke...

And not the fun tire burning kind of smoke...

Thanks Tom, I'll check it out tonight when I head over to my friend's house to do my brakes.

You are certainly welcome Crystal, glad you got it working... I assume it has the premium amp in the trunk??? If so, I figured it was likely since that Bird is well optioned...

Yep, I didn't believe the doors cuz I didn't see the EQ. Lesson learned...

I had no idea about that other plug either and it was surprisingly easy to pull out (probably helps that I have tiny hands). More of that future reference info to store in the back of my head. If it's really that easy I don't understand why people hack up the wiring in these cars so bad...

I do some sidework/ odd jobs at a friends used  car lot and it amazes me how bad people can screw up a car attempting to install a radio.
Its not rocket surgery , and adapter  harnesses are really cheap

Because they are too lazy and/or stupid to take the time to research and learn about how to do things the right way.  The same reason some folks are content to just run wires for the sound system over the top of the carpet instead of doing it right and running them under the carpet where the rest of the wires are.  There's no excuse for that kind of nonsense.

Anyway, I'm glad you got it figured out.  My car had the same setup from the factory as yours.  Premium sound w/o EQ.  I installed a Pioneer head unit and then cut the factory amp out and wired up an aftermarket four channel in its place using the factory wires.  It worked great and saved me hours of work running my own cables.

Glad you found such a nice T-bird.  And that it found such a caring owner!
