Wiring Curiosity

I've been working with kmhracing on a burned up alternator stator wire. This is an 84 5.0 with the 1G alternator and an external regulator.
A white/black goes from the alternator stator to the regulator "S" terminal. There is a second white/black wire at the regulator "S" terminal.
I physically traced this wire on my 84 3.8 and it goes in a harness across the front of the car. There it goes through a 12 pin connector and from there through a 4 pin connector and ends cut off in the harness. This puts it near the VIP Test connector at the left strut tower.
I have the wiring diagrams for 84 that I got from Helm when I bought the car in 84.
The diagrams match how my 3.8 is.
For the 5.0 is has the white/black stator wire going to the VIP test connector. They have it in the position where the tan fuel pump wire goes.
They also indicate that the VIP test connector is red instead of gray.
kmhracing says his connector is gray with the tan fuel pump wire.

I wonder if they ever shipped any cars with the stator wire in the VIP.
