After almost a year on EI, I got some good news today.

I've been accepted to school in September, for the Power Engineering Programme in Port Hawkesbury. Up until today, I was wait-listed, and seeing how fast the class fills up (I applied in November for September and was wait-listed), I was pretty discouraged about it.

But fear no more. I have a clear and definite future, which I didn't have yesterday. , this is a relief. I've been working with the Antigonish Career Resource Centre, trying to figure out some way to make some use of the Economic Recovery Plan (beyond the fact that they gave me 52 weeks of EI), and now I've been informed that I'm eligible for a Government Grant to pay for my school, travel, and living expenses for the two years it will take to get my Class 2. There's also available EI benefits for 8-12 weeks after those two years to give me time to find a job when school is finished. The nice thing about the Grant is that it's not a loan. It's just money that I never have to pay back. That's pretty awesome, when you've spent ten years on a career that lasted just long enough to pay off your student loans. The last thing I want to do is get more loans.

For what, exactly? Being a good neighbour? I live in Canada.

Note, this is NOT a political thread. This is something good happening to me for a change. Let's try not to get the thing locked, ok?

Thanks Scott. Good news, good news. It's nice to know that I'm finally getting something out of all those ridiculous taxes I've been paying all these years. The Governments love a Long Tenured Worker.

we have / had a similar program down here called the "TRA, trade readjustment act".  This is when your job was lost due to outsourcing , there was money available to enter into another field that was considered by the gov't to be a target job.  I looked into it but it would not have worked out for me.  It was somthing along the lines of if you made a "C" or better in your classes, the govt paid 80% then you paid the rest in payments after graduation.  DUring your full time load in school (this part was manditory that you go full time), you qualified for a weekly amount of money at approx 50% of what you got on unemployment.  In West Viginia, the unemployment i got was about 320.00 per week.  This would not have worked out with our basic essential bills.

sounds like a good situation, especially if your colleges up there are following suit with the latest proposed cost increases down here.  Heck, for a  while i was enrolled in Norfolk State Uinversity in Virgnia on a minority grant,, and im white.:rollin:

Hey, congratulations! :D

When I saw Power Engineering, I got excited, but apparently it's a different sort of power engineer :hick:

Anyway, good luck with it - sounds like a great programme! (I added the 'e' on the end so I could sound all Canadian-like).

Thanks everyone. Ange has the day off, so I think we're going to go take a celebratory drive to Cape Breton.

Hah! Nice. Here, a Power Engineer runs a boiler/generator system at a power plant. The theory part is cool too, because then I will have the know how to rig up my own power generation for my home. Knowledge is power, right? :hick:

So, what does a PE do down south?

How could i have forgotten that? Oh well. I was just being a spitefull  anyway.

Any-who, congrats. I'm glad you found a program that actually will work for you. I can support a government program that actually helps people advance. Being pretty well gridlocked in the economic pile up myself i can imagine the feeling of that relief.

Technically, your definition is correct for Power Engineering, I'm technically in Power electronics & might also be referred to as a Power Supply Engineer. Anyway, your field sounds like a lot of fun and as I'm technically a Mechanical Engineer, I did do some learnin' about power engineering, including steam powered turbines.

Dude I would love to know how to rig something like that up.  I am so sick and tired of paying the power company higher and higher rates for the same amount of electricity every year.  Once you learn how to do that, let me know.  I may just pay for you and the wife to take an all expenses paid trip to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina.  ;)

Seriously, though, congratulations.  It is great to hear such awesome news!
