tfi relocation/MN12 distributor question

I was at the yard and saw a 5.0 MN12 thunderbird. The distributor had just wires coming out to a remote mount TFI and heatsink. It was factory looking, I assume it was.

Would this distrib/setup work on my 88 cougar, just plug and play??

Is that distributor drop in on our motors?

I thought all 87-88 models had the remote TFI but I could be wrong. The car I got my heat sink and wires from was an 88 V6 car.

I did a simple relocation of my TFI using the heatsink and wiring from a 88 V6 model. I mounted the heatsink with a brand new TFI module on it and located it to the newer factory location on the radiator support just behind the RH side of the header panel. I gutted an old TFI module and soldered the three wires into it just so it will serve as a sealed connector on the distributor housing. Works great!

to answer your question, yes it will drop in. and all 87-88 models do not have the remote TFI.

Why did the V6 models get the remote TFI and not the V8's? What was the reasoning? Any ideas?

No other wiring splices or differences between the fox and mn12 cars? In regards to the distributor?

I dont know what is involved as far as wiring but I am sure some cutting and splicing will need to be done.

I'm interested in going to a remote tfi conversion after seeing that my V6 car has one, whereby my Sport doesn't.

Is there a better diagram than this one HERE??

Like I said, I have all the parts and wiring I'd probably need, basically, just wondering if it's more/less plug and play with the V6 tfi, or would I need one from a V8? (I do have one of those as well...)

My engine in the Sport is an HO, if that makes any difference. No problems with it yet, but looking to the future with it in mind.

My 94 stang has the remote TFI stock-TRUST ME that thing fails just as much as the distributor mounted module. I wouldn't waste my time converting. Maybe someone else with this system can chime in.

I have mine remotely mounted and haven't had a problem with it. I think it is worth the time and effort it takes to do this mod. There are several places you can pick up those heatsinks and such. I got some older fullsize bronco fenders the other day and it has a TFI and heatsink still mounted on it. It makes Changing the TFI so much easier when you do have to do it. Nice easy location to get to no tiwst or removing the Dizzy. Also the life of you TFI depends on how cool you can keep it so remote mount someplace cool.Also get a quality TFI buy Motorcraft and keep a Cheapy as a spare just in case cause with these TFI's you never know.
