in tank fuel pump questions August 20, 2009, 09:37:53 PM I noticed on my 86 5.0 sefi cougar, my fuel pump doing a few things as of lately. when i shut te key off... it still hums. until i squeeze the relay it will then shut off. The other thing i noticed is it sounds louder now. more like a grinding so i think i my in tank is on the way out.My question being. how hard would it be to remove the in tank fuel pump and swap to an inline? I do know that the fuel tank pick up for 83 had no intank pump. so it would be unobstructed. But is the fuel tank sending unit the same as my 86 unit? with the change of no intank fuel pump? in tank fuel pump questions Reply #1 – August 27, 2009, 01:21:31 AM first off, two things come to mind1pump makes noise = drawing more current = fuel pump relay contacts are burning = contacts are sticking= replace fuel pump and relaythe eec relay >contacts< provide power to the fuel pump relay >coil<.so, your symptom is the relay "seems" to be staying on longer and the fuel pump >contacts< are touching sending power the the fuel pump.to verify....2-have meter or test light-probe the red wire at the fuel pump relay. (relay coil input power)A----if the red wire has power then the relay is still being energized by the eec relay. problem is the eec relay circuit.B----If the red wire has no power, the fuel pump relay is stimply sticking so revert back to item 1 above.----the eec relay may have the same problems as described above in 2B so trouble shoot likewise. in tank fuel pump questions Reply #2 – August 27, 2009, 04:53:35 PM i just checked the red wire at relay under trunk. yellow wire has power red does not with no key in ignition... ill wait til i hear it humming again and check to see if the red wire is sending voltage out when it hums after i shut car off. reason i will wait til its humming... is that way i can know for a more accurate depiction of whats going on WHILE its happening instead of tryin to find out when its not :-p Quote Selected
Fuel pump circuit Reply #3 – September 13, 2009, 03:21:22 AM Hi all,Don't forget that the oik press switch can also keep the pump running while there is oil press. (Or a sticking switch). Quote Selected

(Or a sticking switch). Not on any EFI Ford...If the pump is running with the switch off REPLACE the relay, it's sticking... Common problem on older vehicles, doesn't necessary mean there is(or isn't) a problem with the fuel pump itself.. Getting louder is also a common condition with older pumps... Never seen one cause the relay to stick, though doesn't mean it couldn't happen... Quote Selected
in tank fuel pump questions Reply #5 – September 13, 2009, 03:24:42 PM x2 on replacing the relay. If you can squeeze it and make it disengage and it doesn't reengage, then it's not being "told" to engage.-Also, I am not sure I understand your comment about 83's not having an in-tank pump. I have an 83 5.0 and it has an in-tank pump. I am certain of it, I had to replace it :)I don't know why people are so afraid of replacing in-tank pumps. I've done a few of them. They are time consuming, but not that hard at all. If the tank is full, it can be a beeotch, but otherwise, it's not that big'a deal. Quote Selected

If the tank is full, it can be a beeotch, but otherwise, it's not that big'a deal.there are many models out there with a second pump on the rail near the fuel filter.a primary pump in the tank and a secondary so to speak.these types have a low presure pump in the tank then the high pressure is developed on the second pump.Be aware of these as well as some 84's ive heard about. I think it only applies to the v6's. Quote Selected

in tank fuel pump questions Reply #8 – September 14, 2009, 09:45:56 AM ok to clear up the info about in tank/non in tank pumps... 83 3.8 had straight carburator and mechanical fuel pump... hence no in tank. the 83 5.0 had CFI so it had in tank pumpthe 83 fuel tank pick up i thought may be different for a v6 being no intank pump vs 83-88 5.0's and 84-88 3.8 cars with an intank Quote Selected
