Anyone playing the Powerball Lottery?

I am, it's up to 240-250 Million. They have a pool at work that was $10.00 a person. So far we have 38 people.... thats 380 chances to win. Also, the Wife and I bought $10.00 worth for ourselves.

I have a feeling that I will still have to get up and go to work tomorrow... but what if? Heck, the cash payout is over 83 Million. WOW, I would have to get the car painted. And maybe some new valve covers. What about you?

$5 twice a week for us as well.  Being layed off and back on every two weeks means we have to win this week, lol.  I'm not holding my breath.

I understand, but it's great to dream. Pretty much I think we just kissed $20.00 goodbye, but someone will win.

A $220 million prize only has a payout of $83 million? Sounds more like an $83 million prize to me then...

You can take the money as 30 annual payments who's total would be $220 million (before taxes).
Or take one lump sum payment of 83 million (also before taxes).

Ahh, see, both major Canadian ltteries (6/49 and Super 7) always pay lump sums. There are a few annuity-type scratch lotteries ("Set for Life") but everyhing else is lump sum.

I'd go the payment route and use it as "fun money" after getting into a new home and getting new vehicles.

i dont play the lottery and i dont recall ever seeing someone that won who REALLY could use the money.
the state the lottery is held should be the only people eligible to win it as far as im concerned, i think in my lifetime only one person in NJ actually won the jackpot for that state.

X2 - But I've never been into gambling (and it's illegal in Alabama). Been into a casino twice, only gambled one of those times. Won money. Handed it over to my wife and she lost it all. Haven't been back since. Just not my thing.

Some friends of my in-laws won a lottery prize. Not the jackpot, but enough for them to finally retire. They used half the money they formerly spent on cigarettes and put the other half in the bank. I thought that was pretty cool.

Also I agree with you on nixing multistate/regional lotteries, but that will never happen. It pushes the jackpot skyhigh and sells more tickets. Although I must admit I almost bought my first ticket for fun and then remembered this little factoid.

Quote from: Find the ant in the football field—blindfolded.

The chances of drawing the winning ticket in the multistate Powerball lottery are given at 1 in 150,000,000. Stanford University mathematician Keith Devlin translates the odds this way:

"Imagine a standard NFL football field. Somewhere in the field, a student has placed a single, small, common variety of ant that she has marked with a spot of yellow paint. You walk onto the field blindfolded, and push a pin into the ground. If your pin pierces the marked ant, you win. Otherwise you lose. Want to give it a go?"

I don't play... I barely have enough to pay all the bills and groceries... I can't afford to give away money to others who don't even know me, just because they want to throw their money away each week.
