I wish I could find the information again where it stated why cars weren't allowed to read past 85mph during certain years. Just some regulationedit:for US cars Quote Selected
Re: 85mph only? Reply #4 – April 11, 2005, 06:13:34 PM I think it was during the years right before they made a federal speed limit of 55 mph. They were trying to get people to conserve fuel by driving slower.Obviously, since speed limits are 65 and 70 again, it didn't work. Quote Selected

Re: 85mph only? Reply #12 – April 12, 2005, 12:03:10 AM QuoteWould changing speedometer gears fool the speed limiter?nope, the speedo will just read wrong. tbirds dont have a govener or speed limiter. other than a ton of weight and weak engines... Quote Selected

None before '87 had this feature, but possibly the '88 5.0 Birds/Cougs do. Disconnecting the speed limiter input at the EEC will disable the speed limiter totally... When Ronnie(chrome302jr) had the LSC EEC, his Tbird quit pulling at 102mph till he disconnected the speed sensor.... Quote Selected
