since retro is the in thing

Anybody ever wondered what a retro version of our cars would look like?

Well, not sure what year(s) you mean to be styled after, but Ford tried it:

Returning to the original formula for the Thunderbird, the latest version had a two-seat coupe/convertible layout like the first-generation Thunderbird and retrofuturistic styling to match.

With sales dropping off significantly after its first model year, Ford decided to make the 2005 model year the Thunderbird's last with no scheduled successor.
As for something akin to what we have here, I seriously doubt it'd be a viable option. After all, Ford dropped the Tbird and Cougar because personal sport coupes were a dying trend...

(The fact that the Monte Carlo carried on irks me, although it's wrong wheel drive.)

DOn't get me wrong, I'd love to see a sporty, semi-luxo 2 door with a decent engine and a choice of a manual tranny, with the Tbird and Cougar with each having distinct styling...hell, with the new tt ecoboost engines coming soon, they could have a REAL badass TurboCopue and XR7 again...sadly, it will most likely not happen.

But, if it did...I'd find a way to become an owner of a "NEW" Tbird ;)
But business is business, as they say.

Yes, but unlike the others, the Thunderbird has been a 4 door in the past, so why not again? They could offer a coupe or 4 door, around the same size as a BMW 5 series with an EcoBoost 6 cyl.

If you meant "what would a retro fox bird look like", I'd have to say pretty much like a real Fox Bird. These cars were futuristic when new (they did not match contemporary 80's design), and still looked quite modern even well into the 90's, especially 87-88's, so they don't really have a design old enough to go retro on.

I would like to see a 67-70 retro Cougar. They're  doing it to all the other late 60s muscle cars. Why not an Eliminator.

That's sort of what I was thinking.

As for four door birds ... :barf:

Not a real fan of the S197s.  The second one looks good enough I'd check it out, if they made it.

Both of those concepts have been floating around since they redesigned the mustang. I would love to see the S197 based one tho.

Hot Rod Magazine had a better interpretation when the S197 dropped it ir DID look like a 67 Cougar. Too bad it never came to life.

yuck. i would drive on if someone gave it to me but yeah. I hope they wait 5 to 10 years to redo them. If they ever do. That way parts will still be cheap.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Retro-schmetro.

As TC mentioned, these cars were ahead of their time appearance-wise when they came out.

Really all that's needed to "update" them to where they would blend more with the surrounding cars would be a lighting, interior trim and badging upgrade.  Then add about 500# to them, and Viola! no one would be the wiser.

Hell, just give me an Eco-Boost and I'll keep my "retro" appearance.

Heck I loved that concept, I think its beautiful.  As far as being  retro's after the original, no I dont like it, but as a car, I think its awesome.
