Gt-40 heads legal?

Hey everyone,a while ago i asked what cam i should run and didn't even think about street legal issues...i live in california and smog is a beotch over here..i've decided to go with the e303 simply because its street legal and the tfs stage 1 isn't..:punchballs:

anyway now im wondering if my gt40 heads (f3ze casting)are street legal i looked around and i see they are and they aren't..WTF?

does anyone know?

if they ARE,can i port them and still pass smog?

I don't see why they wouldn't be - all the smog provisions are there. I'm sure they have a greater chance of more emissions than e6/e7 heads with their better flow and lack of the exhaust "smog bump" but it shouldn't affect anything as long as the car is in good tune.

As for legality, technically I believe any modifications made to a car are "illegal", down to a non-stock intake tube/filter, but it normally isn't an issue.

On my first engine with gt40 heads (new build), the car passed smog with no issue - it barely registered for hydrocarbons. The rest of the tests showed nothing. This was still with a single factory cat and smog setup with pump and all. '89 HO cam and Speed Density EEC. New oxygen sensors. I don't think the e303 will affect the numbers much.

You just need to get as complete a burn as you can and stay around stoic, beyond that it won't matter what parts you have. It isn't that difficult to pass with fuel injection as long as your oxygen sensors are responding properly and you aren't too far out of the stock values that the EEC can compensate for.

There is a technicality here.....The GT-40 heads came stock on Ford Lightnings and early 1996 Explorers, they are 100% legal. The GT-40P from the factory is not. It was not drilled for the air emissions pump plugs in the back of the head. That does not mean you cannot simply drill the "P" heads to make them emissions legal. How the hell is the clown running the smog machine gonna know you are running drilled GT-40"P" heads when the car passes with flying colors. The "P" heads are 10 years newer than the stock turds your car came with, so must meet much more strict emissions requirements. Use either one....just do it correctly.:burnout:

Well,  no inspector is going to notice the difference (visually) between a GT40, E7 or E6 head (unless you tell them, and that's just silly.) when installed on the car.

So, the real question is, will you pass smog?  Intake and exhaust port and volume do not affect smog.  Since the all three heads are about the same cc volume, I would expect minimal impact to emissions.

Register the car with some out of state friends?

The F3ZE castings are not drilled for the AIR injection either...the fast burn chamber in the later "P" heads makes them much better for emissions...I live in jersey, which is probably the second worst on emissions...but I have ways around that business...lol.  After I get my 351 in with the ported GT-40's, I may have to smog it...assuming we get the machine sometime soon.

Good luck,
