Salvage yard motors

I'm going to go look at a late 80's lincoln Mark vii lsc sometime soon, and the guy who works at the salvage yard said I could have the entire assembly for $650 bucks. He also has some crown vic motors and the such from like...'84 I think he said.

Has anybody else purchased a motor from a salvage yard?

check http://www.car-part.com, you can search your entire state's junkyards. $650 seems pricey to me but I'm no pro.

the closest motor is a few hundred miles away on that site, and it costs over a hundred more..i did however find some 5.0's from stangs in washington for like...450. one's a 5 speed with 32,xxx miles on it.

If you already have a 5.0 you might consider a '97-ish Explorer engine. GT40 heads and intake, and Lord knows Explorers are plentiful enough. I believe you'd have to swap your existing engine's accessories onto it though...

Well since you have to pick up a 5.0 I would try to get one from a Explorer as others have suggested. Just make sure you go through it before you stab it in though. Also you may want to stick in a stock HO cam in place of the Explorer cam.

Don't forget to check out the local craigslist.
Maybe even put up a wanted ad.

Heck you might even find a whole vehicle with the engine your looking for, For only a few hundred bucks. :hick:

I had very good results with a 5.0 from my local "auto recycling" center...came from a mark VII with 247k miles and a 90-day warranty...it lived for almost 4 years of HARD abuse, many trips to fuel-cut off @ 6,250 and more 1/4 mi passes than I can remember...I put about 50k on it before the crank snapped...I guess I was lucky on that end.

Sometimes the best deals aren't on craigslist or even at the local yard...about 2 months ago I got a 60k mile 351 for $125 and a NEW Zoom clutch for $70...all from a guy at work...sometimes it helps to know people.

Good luck,
Don
