My brother and i are having a discussion April 01, 2009, 05:45:10 PM So my brother and i are having a discussion about his 06 Ford focus 5 speed. He insists that 5 gear is over-drive i insist that it is just fifth gear. Just because fifth is .76 -1 he insists that it is OD. Quote Selected
My brother and i are having a discussion Reply #1 – April 01, 2009, 05:53:58 PM I've always kind of assumed 5th was overdrive just because they are completely useless gears other than cruising down the road. Quote Selected

My brother and i are having a discussion Reply #3 – April 01, 2009, 06:21:11 PM Yep 5th is OD. Any trans gear that has a ratio of less than 1:1 is a OD gear. Quote Selected
My brother and i are having a discussion Reply #4 – April 01, 2009, 06:21:44 PM Usually if the gear ratio is less than 1:1, it is considered overdrive. :D Quote Selected

My brother and i are having a discussion Reply #8 – April 01, 2009, 07:13:48 PM Really depends on what gear is in the rear! 6th might be worthless. Quote Selected
My brother and i are having a discussion Reply #9 – April 01, 2009, 08:05:15 PM The rear end gear (or final drive in a FWD car) has no bearing on overdrive gears. Any gear ratio with less than 1.00 ratio is an overdrive, including 5th gear in most 6-speed trannies (yes, the T56 are double-overdrive). It's called overdrive because the output spins faster than the input.FWIW, many older 4-speed truck trannies are OD as well in 4th gear (3rd is the 1:1) Quote Selected

Unless this is a April Fool's joke (Which I am suspicious that it is) I've never heard of it.4BTPanther Quote Selected
My brother and i are having a discussion Reply #13 – April 01, 2009, 09:44:38 PM I could get one from a camero with the adapter plate and use a ford pressure plate with a corvette clutch, while using a regular t-5 bell housing. I figure it would cost me $1300 with a used tranny. Quote Selected
