Power Booster Replacement

The hissing I have been hearing every time I press the brakes has been found.  I pulled the under dash cover and could clearly hear the hiss coming from the power booster.
I have been having no braking issues.  Does this sound right?  I thought that if the booster went out I would have trouble braking.
Any tricks to changing this thing out?

Yeah itll work for a while hissing like that, but then one day itll just go to the floor and the brakes will release, taking them out is a bit of a pita, but if your patient and can deal with squeesing undr the dash, youll be ok!!!!
The only trick i can think of , is grab a round bar that fits through the bolt holes, and make them a bit wider, it really helps when putting the new one in, my new one didnt line up right so i just stretched the holes and poped the new one right in......

and then you could ask someone like me and Id tell you my white coug has been hissing since 65k miles when i got it in 93.  Its got over 350k now.

The only symptom i find negative (and you should also verify this.....) is when you lightly put your foot on the brake, the pedal will gently bleed down past half way.  Now if you stuff your foot down on it or pump once / twice, it acts normal and brakes fine.

I have never changed one, dont have a clue what to do other than just figure it out as i go.  It couldnt be all that bad, just some beer/car time .

of course, its like that with almost anything i fix on my car........my booster just leaked more and more, the only pita, is adjusting the screw that comes out of the thing, that pushes the master plunger.......

My cruise stopped working about the same time.  Is there any chance they are directly related?

Are you sure it's not the parking brake release under the column? Being that the cruise (which is vacuum operated) went out at the same time it sounds like you have a vacuum leak some where.

Also, you can drive the car without the brake booster. Its just alittle harder to brake. I guess not recommended.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.
