Turbo 4??

Hey I have my 85 Cougar XR7 that I got a while back and it was a barn find, my problem is it sat for five years and will not start. I dropped the gas tank and drained the old gas from it, replaced the fuel filter, replaced the battery and tried ether. It fires on the ether but dies shortly after. This is a temporary engine until I get my Turbo 302 going. Should I replace the injectors? I am already going to replace the fuel pump. Am I going in the wrong direction here?

The car i just got sat for almost 10 years and did the same thing. I just replaced the plugs, cap and wires. It starts up fine and runs great now. I have had no problem with my fuel pump yet, been driving it for 6 months now.

So you think it should fire up? I've tried and tried with no luck. This is an 86K car I got for basically $75 bucks! I really want to be able to drive this thing even while I'm working on my other motor.

Have you taken the spark plugs out to see what they look like? I would take them out, clean them with a piece of sandpaper and try to start it again. If it still dont run on its own than i would check fuel pressure.

It sounded a bit weak. So I've removed it to replace it.

If it fires on the either you know you have spark.
You should replace the plugs and wires, cap and rotor but it will not fix your current problem.
Injectors on these cars barley ever go and never all at the same time.
You have a fuel issue by the sounds of it and probably need a pump or fuel pump relay.

Pretty sure its the pump. It fires just fine on the ether so spark isn't a problem. I figure its gotta be the pump, it looked pretty old anyway.

you might also want to check the fuel pressure regulator.  if the fpr is popped all it will do is return the fuel to the tank.

You do realize you can make at least as much, if not more, horse power with a well built 2.3T as you can from a TT 302 with a stock block?  Not to mention the total embarrasment factor when you whip some one's butt with a 4cyl.
Hate to see a low milage Turbo4 car v8 swapped.
88 TC 5speed, 168000+ miles, stock 2.3T long block, ported RFE6 exhaust, Evergreen T3 running 15#'s.
Up next: FMIC, fresh air intake, ported intakes, ported big valve head.

Yes but I've done too many short production motors and vehicles, parts are expensive and they never seem to be as reliable. I'll hold on to the 2.3 but I am doing a 302 for sure, not positive on turbos yet. Mainly everything is body work and getting my 302 rebuilt and the 4 cyl running. I know there are purists that would not change the motor but I am not that kind of guy. I know these are rare and all but four cyls bore me.
