Ford 5.0L Coyote MOD spied + DSG style sequential manual unveiled

Word broke just yesterday that Ford was developing an all-new 5.0L V8 – internally dubbed ‘coyote’ – but our on-the-spot spy photographers have already managed to snap a couple of shots of the new powerplant. The 5.0L mill will essentially replace Ford’s 4.6L V8.

Although Ford has yet to make an official announcement, the coyote V8 will first appear in the base 2011 Ford F-150 and 2011 Mustang GT.

Thanks to a four-valve per cylinder setup, the 5.0L should return similar fuel economy ratings to Ford’s current 5.4L V8 – perhaps even slightly better. But despite an added focus on fuel economy, the new coyote V8 is expected to crank out at least 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft or torque.

With the 2010 Mustang and 2009 F-150 being all new models, we suspect Ford will keep the new powertrain under wraps for a few months just to make sure sales are not upset. In all likelihood, the coyote V8 could be kept a secret until mid-year 2010.

With the new intake and throttle body moved to front where the alternator normally sits, the first thing that comes to mind is GM LS.
I'm sure it's more efficient than the side inlet they have had.

In this day and age I'm a little surprised that the intake runners aren't plastic.
I noticed it does have that new for 2010 "noise maker" tube running from the air inlet to the firewall. :burnout:

I wonder if this is an R&D result of the 5.0L "CAMMER" engine from the Ford Racing catalog or if it's just an "evolution" of the production 4.6 DOHC.

about time. that 4.6 is a joke to have in a  fullsize truck or in crownvic.
remember it easier to fix them, than to find them after they been crushed.

that statement is about as sharp as a flat basketball...why do you think the 4.6 sucks?

Looks like FoMoCo took a good long look at the GM LS engine...and based it (loosely) off that design.

I mean, ...well...I hope it makes it to production.

well look at where the torque of the 4.6 is at! in the higher 2800+rpm range . sorry, i don't drive my 6500lb fullsize truck or the 4500lb crown-vic daily in that range. every person i sold a ford truck to with a 4.6. traded it back, for one that had 5.4!


the 4.6 is just like the old 351-4v cleveland. work great in TO the high rpm  but  when i need low rpm(2500OR LESS) to get through the mud/snow/ tow a trailer. there DOGS! that why they suck.
 where i'm at .we use a truck for the same reason they built truck in the first place! we don't use them to impress the jones!

Based on the LS engine? This new engine has DOHC and 32 valves. It's not even remotely similar to the LS (not that there's anything wrong with the LS). I dunno if it's based on the 4.6, but it is closer in design that the LS...

Speaking of the LS, I was reading an article about them in a recent Hot Rod magazine. The article was about a new Dart block that is a hybrid of SBC and LS. In this article a vague statement is made that the LS heads are actually very similar to the Ford Windsor design. Interesting...

Wasted R & D money equating into higher prices to the consumer FTL....

Hopefully the cam covers are revised to look nicer than those shown....

maybe so but they make killer "street car" engines and race engines. they do suck in an f150, wrong application imo. but they dont suck.
 
bout' time ford banged out a modern 400hp NA.
 
10' stang will be sweet but what has my eye is the potential taurus "sho" version with the TT V6 @ almost 400 hp.

Well, 350. Not quite 'almost' 400. ;) I think it's much bigger news too. I'd like to see this dual-clutch in the SHO, and I'll act surprised when they give it one. :D

Just remember, this coyote mill is rumored to have an 11:1 static compression ratio....not exactly boost friendly.  It's also rumored to have a 7000 RPM redline...

thought the same when i saw the heads, also take a look @ the RO7 race engine...looks like a windsor too

True....they will likely still use garbage pistons and rods in them as well. I would personally rather a NA 400hp car than a boosted 400hp car leaving out that the boosted engine generally would have forged parts.

Knowing firsthand the torque curve produced by a positive displacement blower -- I'd go blower ;)

Besides, I'm over 400 to the flywheel, LOL!

True dat, but it doesn't appeal to me as much as a DOHC 5.0L Ford V8 would have a couple years ago. I'm more interested in that TTV6. Would be nice if they would drop it in the AWD Fusion. :D

Well, i meant (also as posted before, lol) that it has the intake inlet location as a similarity, etc. Just my first glance at the heads kinda reminded me of the LS mills...sorta.
I dunno, I just see a certain "resemblance" if you will...even though they're about as different as night and day.

Who wants to bet that IF this engine makes it to production...IF it has 350-400 hp, and IF it really is all that and a sack of chips..that some GM-lovin smartass will say that Ford still can't beat GM with 2 more valves and cams? lol

I hope they build it though...
As for the 4.6 and 5.4 being py engines...it all depends on the application.
Put one in a heavy truck, and yeah, i know it's doggy and not what you'd want..
