which ler or catback system to get?

I have a 87 cougar ls V8 5.0 302  and i'm trying to figure out what type system to get.

i'll be turning 18 tomorrow so im still young and the car is my daily driver.

I looked at a cherry bomb ler because i've seen alot of them and like the sound of them.  but one of my dads friends said that if i can get one I might wanna try to get a performance catback system.

does anyone know of a good System that will still have the nice loud roar of glass packs? or anything they recomend that may have a sound bit so i may hear them.

Much thanks.

Thank you for the reply and the welcome to the site.

But honestly i hav eto say I dont have hat much funding to go that big.  i'll be 18 tomorrow and my dad is deployed overseas.

right now im just trying to find a decent or good catback system that will give my car a nice sound and a little more power.

I have a cherry bomb glass pack because I like the sound of them. but its not on yet and i was thinking about just getting a full catback system untill my dad gets back.

on other sites some people are saying the cherry bomb is good and that i should add exhaust pipes.  and others are saying that I should dump the cherry bomb and just get a flowmaster or borla ler and go to a custum shop for custome pipes.

Does anyone have any recomendations on what i should do?
or is the cherry bomb fine for right now untill my dad gets back.
if i can find a fair priced catback system I would like one that has the sam eloud tone as the cherry bomb if possible.  any advice?

How much are you looking to spend if you go away from the cherry bomb?

well I cant exactly say i know much about domestic cars since im kinda more familiar with imports.  but if I can get a nice set i would like to spend less than $300.00

alot of people on other forums are talkin bad about the cherry bombs but for me i like the classic loud roar.

I cant exactly say i know what im lookin at when it comes to kits,

I mean i know what the parts are and what they do, but I dunno what brand or type to get to get a good horse power gain and a loud tone.    I just know that strait pipes, glass packs, or open headers are always Loud.

any help or advice?

For less than 300 you could find a pair of mustang shorty headers (Shouldnt be no more than about 30 bucks a pair for stock used) and if you dont have to worry about emissions laws you can get a non catted h pipe from summit racing for about 110, and you can also search summit for lers they can range from like 30 bucks apeice to over 100. You can also dump the lers before the axles and omit tailpipes if you are on a budget. I run Cherrybomb vortex's on mine (also a 302) and they sound great, dynomax superturbo s have a nice sound also, but i wouldnt recommend running straight pipes or open headers either you dont want it too loud.

Thanks for the kind words.

From what some other people are saying.  It might be better just to get a fully custom kit from the local exhaust shop, or atleast have them add to the cherry bomb if i wanted.

one guy said the it may even be a good idea to get the bomb put on or another ler and just have the shop do X or H pipes.

my dad is supposed to be home from Iraq soon so I may just have our friend do a secure clamp for now that way i can alter or add the parts later and weld it all up after i find the setup i want.

is it possible ot run True duals from both heads?
basicaly its just splitting them and basically making 2.5 for each side right?  or is there more to it than that?

Thats what the X or H pipe does, you will need some sort of headers for it. you will need to know if you need cats for emmisions, thats where the price comes in to play. most parts can be had used fairly cheap.

the h-pipe is nessisairy on a v-8. On a v-6 it dosen't matter. The cherrybomb will make it sound loud, but you will gain nothing from it. Everything for a fox mustang pretty much bolts right up. just have to add a foot or so to it. So there really is not reason to get a "custom" kit, unless you plan on major upgrades. If your gonna stay stock, go 2.25". If your going to upgrade do the 2.5.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Getting a fully custom kit from an exhaust shop is almost definitly gonna be more expensive than the shorty header/h or x pipe/ler exhaust deal, plus a lot of shops are falling on hard times so they might take advantage of someone who dosent know much about it;)

this is just my opinion, but don't spend the money on Flowmasters.  They suck and are way overpriced for what they are.  I had a set once and didn't like them at all...there are lot of other brands of lers that flow better and have a more aggressive sound.

BTW welcome aboard.  You will learn alot from these guys!

i would just get some shorty headers then get a cheap h pipe then choose something better than cherrybombs and flowmasters. like warlock lers are nice because you can run tailpipes and also dump at the lers by unscrewing this cap thing or for now you can just use the cherrybomb till you save up for a better exhaust later.
