Dual exhaust from a v8 bird on a v6 cat... March 24, 2005, 10:52:53 AM Since I have 2 weeks to work on my car, I was planning on pulling a dual exhaust from a V8 tbird, 87-88 I think. The only problem I'm currently running into is the cats and the offset gas tank on my car, I can't take them from the junkyard so I will have to cut them off and have my girlfriends dad weld new ones on to the pipes. WIll the right tail pipe fit out the back?I was also going to get flowmasters or similar, something that will fit to replace the old lers.Now unless someone can tell me where I can get custom bent piping for super cheap cause the junkyard will probably charge me like 20-30 for everything pluss the lers. I also need a new manifold for the passenger side. I plan on replacing all the bolts because these are rusty and will probably break...which I hope they don't until I get all the bolts out. What kind of bolts could I use? Can I just grab the right size galvanized bolts from home depot or what? Quote Selected

You can buy brand new tail pipes from any parts store for like $30 each so I don't know why you would want to get them from a junkyard. If I understand you right you want to cut the cats off you car and weld new ones in? Unless your cats are clogged that is not going to help any. Quote Selected

Reply #2 – March 24, 2005, 11:16:49 AM Well, I don't know that I would advocate this for everyone.. but I had to cut the main cat out of my '86 a few months back.. I just used a piece of flex pipe the next size or two (I forget which, exactly.. maybe 2 1/4"?) up so it would slip over the existing pipe ends, a pair of clamps, and some of that quik-steel that handles up to 500 degrees. So far, it has held up without leaking.. and I think it's been about 4 months now. If you have no other way to get things hooked up, there's always that.. and it's REALLY cheap to do. (of course, this only works in areas where no one will notice your cat is missing)Don't know what else to tell ya. I don't intend on putting dual exhaust on my '86 V6, so I don't know much about putting the dual setup on cars that didn't have it already. Not even using dual exhaust if/when I put the 300 I6 into it.. probably just a 3" single. My '88 5.0 has the "fake dual" that is a single pipe from the trans back to just before the axle. I intend to duplicate that setup if/when the exhaust is replaced on that car, except I'll use larger pipe and route it a bit differently. Quote Selected

Reply #4 – March 24, 2005, 11:34:56 AM well on the 87's you are gonna have to move the fuel filter and fuel lines to the other side of what looks to be a sub frame. other than that thats about all the relocation you need to do b4 running the dual exaust out the back. on the 88's that already taken care of. im sure its the same on tbirds. but i know on cougars the 87's you have to relocate all the fuel lines and fuel filter but on 88's they came from factory with duals on xr7 at liest. so hope that helps ya out a bit.and never give up on your car no matter how many times you get pissed at it just walk away and try again a couple hours later. That includes the cat's pipe, and everything after them. 5.0L exhaust on a 3.8L Quote Selected

You may find (like I did a month ago) that 2 new cats (no pipes) cost exactly the same as an entire new H-pipe with cats, s and air pipe. Guess which way I went? Quote Selected
