Mine was wasted when I had that experience. The bands were toast. My TV cable came out of the grommet and within no time, goodbye AOD.I'm glad I did the 5 speed swap thanks to some rather strong peer pressure here on the board.LOL.

A 5 speed swap is a good idea.I took my time and gathered parts and actually did it pretty cheap.

To each their own, but I'm an automatic fanatic personally.  A good automatic is pretty hard to beat.  A good forum for you to visit would be Clickclickracing.com.  Go to the "clickclicktech" forum.  There's a guy in that forum who goes by the screen name "Silverfox" that has forgotten more about AOD's than most tranny guys will ever know.  It's hard to believe how much I've learned about AOD's by reading as much as I could in that forum.  I'll bet I wore the "search" button out!

"Silverfox" (Dan) is going to build a valve body for me that's got a lot of great features.  One of the features included, is no longer needing to adjust the TV cable.  Another great feature is that his VB is going to make my overdrive switchable.  In other words, my AOD won't shift into OD unless I flip a switch.  I'll also be able to adjust shift points, by dropping the pan and turning a screw.  These valve bodies are very affordable too (right around $200).

To address the weak, 2-piece input shaft AOD's come with, I had Dirty Dog Performance make a high-stall converter for me that has no direct drive function.  That means it doesn't lock up like a normal AOD would in 3rd gear, or 4th gear.

It's a really efficient converter, so I should only run about 200 RPM's higher at cruise on the freeway than I would if my AOD locked up.  Silverfox has said on many occasions that deleting the direct drive like I had done, will double the power handling capabilities of your average AOD.  Features offered in his custom valve bodies drastically improve the performance these transmissions.

Head over there and start a thread about your tranny.  He'll be able to tell you with whatever you need to know Dude.  Without spending too much money, you can make AOD's much more durable and pretty potent performance-wise too.  Good luck with that thing.  :D

If you have any questions, I'll do the best to help with the linkage.  I'm running a carbed 302 with an AOD.

Here's a pic of the TV Linkage.

Just what I was gonna suggest. Putting a carburetor on an AOD-equipped 302 requires a special bracket for the TV ("kickdown") cable.

The TV cable and/or linkage also may be seized right at the transmission, if the car has sat around for any time. It has a very weak return spring on it, and if there's too much resistance it will go to WOT position the first time you floor the car (even if only pumping the gas to start it) and will not return. This will cause the tranny to act like you've always got your boot into it (near redline upshifts). It happened to my '88 Cougar before I bought it (the dealership thought the tranny was fvcked)...

I would like to add what I learned about the kickdown.

You don't want to use a carb designed with the kickdown linkage.  It only "kicksdown" when at WOT.

What you do want is a standard throttle assy like the one in my picture.  For an AOD you need to have increasing pressure on the TV cable/rod through the whole range of motion on the throttle.

If you run a C4/C6 etc... you would use the kickdown method.

Hope this helps.

I have the same problem, on my 87 fuel injected 5.0. It worked fine when removed from the car, which leads me to believe it should still be fine. Is there supposed to be a vacuum line? Where does it connect on the tranny, where on hte other end?

as said once....the AOD need solid connection and must be stroked through the whole motion of the throttle...it is a TV system (THROTTLE VALVE) and kickdown is just for c4/c6

Mine was a problem I think of both low tranny fluid and the indicator thing with the prndl thing. I had the one from a turbo coupe which has an extra gear over the aod.

Just thought I would let you know.

I got the aod to work but I was just wondering if any one knows if there is a braket for the TV cable to hook up to the 302 carb witch is a holley. Thanks for your time.
