2009 Acura TL

I first saw the new photos of this car in this month's Car & Driver. They praise this thing up-and-down, especially the exterior styling.

I think I've lost most, if not all, interest in new cars. This thing absolutely, positively has to be the ugliest frigging thing I've ever seen in my life. Note the awkward 90° joint where the bumper cover meets the front fender.
I visualize buck-toothed chipmunks whenever I glance at the front end, and the ass of the car looks like a cross between a toaster, a Saturn and a Camry. I do like the exhaust, but what's up with the Schwinn reflectors in the rear bumper cover? Did they need something to break up the massive visual mass?
The side profile looks like a Camry mixed with a Mazda 3.
Has anybody seen the '09 Mazda 3? Yeah, it looks exactly like a Camry; especially the rear end.

I just don't get it. I try to keep an open mind, but everything looks exactly the same to me. Mid-size SUVs all blend together. I have to spot the emblem in the grille to see what make it is, and I've always been extremely good at spotting and naming cars.

Am I alone here? I mean, people are buying these things.

I lost interest in anything new a long time ago....this BS only strengthens my position.

I saw one on the road the other day. On the highway. Forgot exactly what the front end looked like. Passed him (in my 87 crown vic :hick::rollin: ) and took one look and my jaw dropped and I stared in disbelief. It pretty much looked 10 times WORSE than in the pictures I've seen!!!! Makes me think of an....iceberg or something. Big and no apparent organization of it's looks at all. Good point about the joint of the bumper cover and fender. Wow.

The best thing I can come up with to describe it all.....a semicircle on wheels. That's what we're moving towards.

I know people think its a stupid re-hash but pretty much the retro-influenced cars are all I like. That and a few that stand out.

I hate acuras. I hate their drivers. They all think they've got the best shiznit in the world. Eff you....my busted ass MILDLY modified 21 year old granny barge can beat your TSX 0-60. OWNED. Retards.

Wow, that thing is pretty bad!

I saw a new VW today that I thought was pretty sharp.  It almost looks like a scaled down Mercedes CLS.  I came home and looked it up.  It's the new VW CC VR6.  It looks better in person than in photos.  Other than the big veedub emblems, I really like it.

Zach, I think Car & Driver hated the styling. It was mentioned in the "lows" section. You're right though - the things are absolutely hideous. The new Hondas are no better - they seem to have a "Mini USB port" styling theme going.

If you think your 4000 pound, 150 horsepower sled would stand a chance against a 300+ horsepower 3800 pound AWD sedan I've got some swamp land in Florida I can let you have cheap. That Acura, ugly as it is, would likely be through the quarter mile before you hit 60 MPH. The guy you "beat" was probably unaware you were racing. He was probably too busy hiding below the dash so nobody would see him in such an uggmobile.

Obviously he was just crusing along....so was I....I was just doing 70 mph and he probably about 65. Just saying it was kinda ironic, that fact LOL

And I realized the other confusion...I meant the cougar not the vic :hick: that hasnt been TOUCHED and I dont plan to. Winter beater = no MODZZZ. That would be pretty stupid.

You're right, from one point of view it looks like a Saturn Sky, from another it looks like a Camry, and maybe you could stick a peice of bread in the trunk and toast it....hehehe

personally!  i think  if the car makers can't copy some style from the pass, then there out to see who can make the most ugliest car/truck.
remember it easier to fix them, than to find them after they been crushed.

I know that shield. It's Captain Americapan!

http://forums.780tuners.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=87304&highlight=captain+americapan

It's funny, I made pretty much the same thread on a tuner site I'm on (I used to cruise with these guys out in Edmonton) back in September. And it's not just the TL. The entire range has this ed awful snout shield. The Hondas are starting to do their own hideous grilles too. Google 2009 Pilot to see what I'm talking about.

As for the abilities of the car, the SH-AWD TL is a killer performance sedan. Look up some comparison tests, you'd be surprised how fast that wart is.

Not in the January issue:
Quote from: People from C&D who have zero taste
Finally, an Acura sculpted front to back with one theme in mind, rakish, ominous, one step short of menacing... This is brave, and the more we look, the more we see a breakthrough design... Overall, we see grace deftly balanced against aggression.
Perhaps I'm speaking for myself here, but I think the car looks laughable and disproportionate, not menacing and graceful.
I've never been a fan of hard, acute angles and sharp edges, especially when adorned with so much chrome. The design of this car carries these unfortunate traits, but the overall shape of the car looks soft and bloated. There's just too much aesthetic conflict for me.
Maybe I'm buttstuffyzing it too much.

You called it. I was thinking the exact same thing when I spotted my first '09 Pilot in the rear-view mirror last week. It seems like nothing matches up. The gigantic headlights coupled with the thick, oversized grille just doesn't work with chrome. Maybe, maaaaybe it would work as body color with some smaller headlights.

I've never owned a foreign car and I never will. I'm sure they have their redeeming qualities somewhere, I just have had good luck with my Fords for the past 30+ years. Before anyone chimes in and and says there are a lot of foreign components in Fords, I realize that. But the corporate profits still stay here in America where they belong. So, these puppiesanese pretenders can design whatever they want, I'll stick with my T-Birds, Mustangs, F150s, Taurus/Sables, etc.

I think if Americans want to get their money back, from these loans, they need to adopt this attitude. It's a guaranteed repayment. You have literally, as a nation, invested in yourselves, and stand to make all the dividends in jobs. The story is exactly the same here in Canada, only our corporate profits still go south.

Magna Motor Company, where are you? I'll buy, just make it. :hick:
