T3 vs IHL turbo differance

My TC has a new turbo and I want to put adjust the boost when I want from 12lbs to 16lbs but I have read that the motors can handle 16lbs or boost but the IHL 87/88 stock turbos can't really handle that much for a long period before blown up. How can I tell just by looking at the turbo with out taking anything of the car, to see if its is a T-3 or IHL. The previse owner sayed he put a stock tubo and I asked him and he sayed it was a T-3 but it was a stock rebuilt turbo. So how do I tell if its a T-3 or IHL turbo, Cause if it is a T-3 I think I hit the jake pot. He sayed he payed over 400 just for the turbo. So can anyone help.

huh?

For one, it is an IHI...  and yes they can handle over 16psi, but the T3 is way more efficient.  If your car has an automatic, dont raise the boost till you beef it up...  the T3 is physically bigger then the IHI

A T3 being larger spools slower, and the output isn't located correctly for the IHI inter cooler setup...

For a every day driver the IHI is a good setup...

I can guarantee you it's an IHI. You have to run different coolant lines and oil return line for a T3, and the previous owner wouldn't do that just to fix a car.
It's Gumby's fault.

Do yourself a favor and keep the boost down.

I can see it right now "gies I tried turning my boost up and the boost gauge just went all the way over and my motor blew up."

It starts spooling at around 2500 to 3000 rpms can you tell by that.

That's pretty vague, could mean anything.

Looking at your first post, you should probably go read some facts about IHI turbos, and for gawd's sake...a previous owner will say anything to get you to fork over money for a car...trust me.

And unless you're sure of what you're doing, best not to mess with upping the boost.

Lastly...can you get picks of the turbo? we could tell then for sure if it's a T3 or an IHI...that's eye-ayechuh-eye...not eye-ayechuh-ell.
