New to me '83 TC August 10, 2008, 06:25:53 PM Last Tuesday I brought home a new '83 Turbo Coupe. Back in the late 80s and early 90s I had an '85 TC that I absolutely loved. With a growing family I sold it.Messing around on Craigslist I found the below '83. It needs paint and a couple odds and ends. The only things that do not work are the right door lock, antenna, A/C and the HVAC fan is noisy. The interior seems to have been taken care of. It has leather with no tears. The front seats could use some work but the back seat is near perfect. The manual pump lumbar supports work great. The dash pad is even near perfect. The drivetrain is tight and drives straight. I do not believe the turbo is boosting completely, the light comes on but there is no feel, just a very slight whistle can be heard. The head is fresh, there is no smoke on start up or under full throttle. There is a small leak from the front seal. There were a couple drops on the floor after sitting for a week.I am not completely sold on the project just yet but am getting quite excited. If we decide to dive in there will be a complete repaint with body matching the mirrors, grill and headlight buckets. The fenders will be filled to do away with the side markers. There will be no side molding and I will shave the bumper moldings down on each of the sides front and rear to taper to the fenders and quarters. As for suspension I have been talking to Chris at MM about doing full coilovers along with tubular A-arms and rear lower control arms. Of course I have read where there have been several issue with the spindles not completely working with the ball joints and I would like to have a good solution for this prior to starting. New to me '83 TC Reply #3 – August 11, 2008, 11:18:43 AM Lookin good not to many 83-84's around here. Looking inside your car is like looking into mine. Only your dash pad it near perfect and mine is toast. The front seats look just like mine only mine are worn more. As for the boost and no feel. That light tells you Boost Yes or no but not how much. Best to put a Boost/vac gauge in there to get a better idea. Also take a peek under the car. That factory exhaust can't help flow to much. They make a tool to line up the front cover so the front seal gets centered to help stop leaks. Mine does have working A/c though. And for that Blower motor does all speeds still work. Then it sounds like it is getting time to replace the blower motor. Quote Selected
New to me '83 TC Reply #4 – August 11, 2008, 01:58:19 PM Thanks All!!!The truck in the background is a s10. It was goig to be my project b4 this cam along.Gauges should be ordered tonight so I can know what is going on. The blower motor works on all speeds but is noisy. It along with the heater core will get replaced soon. The heater core is fine but while I am there ya know.If all goes well the car will go into the shop on Wednesday to have the A/C repaired. Planning on staying r12. Quote Selected
New to me '83 TC Reply #5 – August 11, 2008, 03:10:27 PM Well buddy no use in pull the dash for a blower motor. It is a little tight but it can be done without removal of the dash. As for the A/c I tell you to head to the local parts store and get an O-ring kit and some flush solvent. Flush the parts and hoses with the solvent and replace all the O-rings. Then blow it all out again and reconnect everything. Then take it to the shop if ya want. They will do the same thing and charge you $$$for it. Quote Selected
