time clock on software

my son has a music software that he bought for about 120 bux.  there are no other options for him to register his software other than on line.

His computer has an ethernet high speed card but we have no high speed internet.  He has no modem card.

The software has a pop up that tells hiim how many days (currently 20) before the software will no long opperate.

What options does he have other than taking his pc to an area with high speed? and getting on line.

I hate stupid software engineers who do not think of all end user situations where the terminal is not on line.  There is no post card to mail in or any option on line to call tech support.  This company must have something to hide if all they have available to consumers is on line or email interaction.

The software is called "Riffworks" for music recording,, or something like that.

Personally I would stay away from it it there's no support. there are a lot  companies that are here today gone tomorrow in that sort of area. if he's truly into music and recording something I would get him a used mac with Garage Band where he could work up to some professional editing software and hardware interface for about $150.
If you need help with software to do the job  Give booksix a pm he does recording for a living. He would know more about what's out there than most people. I haven't done it professionally in about 15 years, to give you enough input.

Connecting his computer to the net, would be the only way that I can see to register it. or possibly another computer with the software, as long as it doesn't write a file to be machine specific.

You obviously have internet access, be it dial-up or whatever.  Do you have an ethernet card in your machine?  If so, a $20 switch at Wally World, and enabling Internet Connection Sharing on your machine will solve his woes.  It won't be a high-speed connection, no more so than yours is, but it'll get him connected.  If no ethernet card, that too can be had for around $20 from your favorite PC hardware supplier.

I guess after reading what you said old paint a couple of times, the words you didnt say finally sunk in.

you mean,,,,,,,network his computer to mine, create a home network on my machine,, correct.

Ive been down that road with the linksys cabled to my machine.  The three laptops here can not see the host but can see eachother.  For some reason, my machine is not able to see them either.  I went down this road a while back when i wanted to use my my machines printer as the network printer.  No one else could see the printer but me.

this sounds like too many special settings to get it to work for just a 10 minute deal on the internet.  Also, I would probably have to do a system restore just to get rid of all the settings id have to do to make this work.  PITA.

it really shouldn't be too involved. Create a network domain, enable sharing and make sure all the computers have like internet proticals. What kind of computer does he have and what kind do you? vista/xp to ME/98?

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

No problem bring his computer to the shop and we will get him connected. Your laptop is setup through your business domain and is limited to what access you have as far as networking.:punchballs:

sheldon,
the tech support says no other option. I may just go ahead and pick up a modem card from you if you dont mind ,, get him setup for internet anyway for dial up.  I  just gotta figure out what slot that thing is and see if you have stock.  I just hate doing it because that machine is a virgin to the www with not an ounce of time to get a virus.  Hes really enjoying not having to deal with getting a virus and such.  That may all change soon though but i guess thats what symantic and spybot is for.\

as for the networking thing,, i was talkin about linking masons to brits but realized all my long RJ cables are too short.
