Diesel '67 Cougar

Much of the vegetable oil and biodiesel movement centers around the classic Mercedes-Benz inline six cylinder engine, but fine examples of the genre are getting tougher to find. As is always the case with older machines, time and driving in general take their toll on the bodies and chassis of our favorite classics. But, these old Mercedes lumps can be rebuilt to fine running order. Wondering what to do with that good-running or rebuilt turbodiesel engine? How about dropping it into the engine bay of some classic Detroit iron? Many of these older American vehicles were built with engine-bays capable of accepting everything from a straight-six to a huge big block V8 engine. If that sounds like too much trouble, perhaps you should take a look at an example that's already been converted. Right now on Craigslist in L.A. is a cherry 1967 Mercury Cougar with a Mercedes OM617 cast iron turbodiesel engine from a Mercedes-Benz 300SD. Mated to a four-speed manual tranny, we'd imagine that many trouble-free miles of burbling diesel goodness are in store for this particular gem.

To be nice to the dial-up crowd, I'll just link the photo gallery.

I've always said that when CRD Liberties become $500 cars (and they're Jeeps, so they will) I will build a diesel fox 'Bird. I've even thought about using the 2.4 liter BMW inline 6 as Ford did with the Lincoln Mark VII, but I don't think that one cranks out enough power...

The idea is neat (imagine daily driving this thing at 35-40MPG's). The execution needs a little finishing though (shifter stalk and engine bay wiring). What do you think? I actually like the concept (though maybe not in a Cougar). Think about how many cheap old cars are out there in nice shape with an I6? A Fairlane or Galaxie would be cheap and cool, maybe even something newer? A late 70's Ranchero with a cummins would make a rocking tow vehicle/pickup!

Nice, I'd rock it.

I'd also convert it to run on Bio diesel .

I sold a nasty escort diesel to some guy that puts them in new edge cougars.  I guess it's a fairly easy swap.

I really want to find a wrecked Mark VII diesel to swap in a fox bird, but the diesel marks are almost impossible to find.

Also, I know where there's a '72 bird that is just begging for a powerstroke.

Yep. Our fuel prices are much higher and emissions standards aren't as tough as yours - Smart cars were diesel too, until they decided to enter the US market and decided a one-engine-fits-all approach would be better...

I enjoyed the extra fuel economy of my '81 Diesel Olds Sta wgn(32-33 mpg hwy), especially when it was generally priced less than regular... Now that it's sold by BTU content and .50-.75 a gallon higher than premium, I wouldn't touch any diesel with a 10ft pole...
