engine pics May 05, 2008, 07:47:42 PM OKay,I've posted a few times about my ongoing T-Bird project, and now lack of the 'Bird part....So I finally took a couple pics of the engine and will make my first ever attempt to post pics.Sorry for all the junk in the background. Later I'll finish some stuff I need to do and roll it outside for a new pic.I hope this works... Quote Selected

engine pics Reply #7 – May 06, 2008, 04:49:39 PM I got the short-block(Block, crank, pistons, rods) from Cale Yarborough's team before it folded. The heads, intake, magnesium front cover, pulleys, brackets, 5-stage oil pump and 130amp alternator from Ernie Elliott. The stainless headers from Robert Yates Racing. I'll be using a Richmond RoadRace 5 speed, no overdrive. Aluminum flywheel and the clutch has an aluminum pressure plate. Both have steel friction faces. The intake manifold is dry, as the water is run out the front of the heads through the #16 fittings seen in the pics. The lifter valley is sealed with an aluminum pan, so I can easily remove the intake without messing with any seals or silicone. It has a small CompCams roller cam instead of the solid lifter the Cup guys are required to use. Only 12-1 compression.Ernie told me to watch the power curve on the dyno, but don't be afraid to turn it 9500rpm. He built one nearly identical for one of the Atlanta Braves baseball players and it made 725hp, but my carb is better. But I'll be using a different dyno too. We'll see. I started building up another 302, and was hoping for 350-400hp. But I sort of stumbled into some deals on these parts and the project snowballed.I still have a few things to finish on the motor. I still need to double-check the starter clearance on the oil pan. I had to flip the Tilton starter to clear the headers, and had to notch the kickout on the pan. So if everything clears now, I have to recoat the pan. ARP doesn't make a bolt or stud kit to fit this timing cover, so I have studs made from Allthread to send them as patterns. And I want to try and fit an AC compressor in front of the passenger side head.I'm still trying to decide whether to use the motor mounts pictured, or build a front block plate. I recently added "wings" to the bellhousing to act as a rear mount. I also modified the bellhousing and block plate so that I don't have to un-bolt the starter to pull the transmission. I'll have a quick-connect on the clutch hydraulic line.I'm always open to thoughts and suggestions from others too. Quote Selected

engine pics Reply #12 – May 06, 2008, 10:09:02 PM I'd put it in a Fairmont futura. baby blue in color with the ugliest hubcaps imagineable. I assume it's not a street car, lol. Looks sweet! Quote Selected
engine pics Reply #13 – May 07, 2008, 04:22:03 PM I intend for the Bird this goes into someday to be a streetcar. It might be much for rainy weather or to call it a "Daily Driver", but I have to set some mental limits to keep from building an all-out roadrace racecar. I don't have a budget to race, and the open track and HPDEs all require "streetcars". This way I can still take it to cruise nights, run errands, make a drive through the mountains, etc.I'm trying to keep it so that almost anyone could climb in and drive it. I could have put a crazy camshaft in, 3 disc clutch, and nobody could drive it. Quote Selected
