Digital fuel guage flashes

My sons 83 has a digital fuel guage which blinks constantly from E all the way to F. He has only had the car a few weeks and it has worked properly once. He still has the low fuel light on the dash and it functions normally along with recording his mileage between fills. Since this car is still new here I havent found any old Ford manuals for it yet but if anyone has had a similar experience let me know if you ever cured it. Thanks in advance, Dan.
