Has anyone tested cowl induction hoods?

Has anyone used a cowl induction hood?  By "use" I mean other than cosmetic.  If so, was the car carb'd, forced induction, intercooled?

the one I built sucks water in when you drive in the rain, so yeah they work...

once you get up to about 60MPH and faster, the water starts getting sucked into the engine bay, instead of dripping off the lip.

I always wonder how much one would reduce underhood temps for the Supercharger. The cooler the air across the charger, the less heat build-up, the faster I go! :hick:

That is interstesting to know. Not what I want happening. That means the air coming in has to go somewhere and that is under the car.

Thanks for the info.  Can you give me some details on your setup?  How high is the cowl? 

I'm trying to decide between a scoop and cowl induction.  It would be nice to resolve this without a lot of prototype testing.

Hillbilly Deluxe,

The base of the windshield is a high pressure area so it's a good source of air for induction or cooling.

Contrast that with the factory 87-88 scoops, they're positioned in a low pressure area and not shaped optimally for air flow.

Yes this is true. The only correct way to run a cowl induction hood is to use a plate to seal off rest of engine compartment so that only the air goes to the air filter. If it is not then the air enters the engine compartment and is pushed against the firewall and follows it down and under the car. Since I am not running a carb with an air filter, but need the added height, a blocked cowl is better for me.
The factory hood scops are a re-styling of a true NACA duct had they used them then they would have been more efficient.

That's good food for thought, thanks.

Gumby indicated he was going to use the factory scoops as heat vents.  Gumby, if you're watching, please chime in.  Were you planning on using the venturi effect somehow?  What about modifying the slots, ie partially block them, add some kind of bulge or depression?

It is about 3"s high at the back.

Since I am going carbed, I'd consider one if the scoop followed the curve of the hood and didn't end like a freakin' ski jump.
I'll probably just keep the flat hood and seal the airbox to the cowl, but the extra clearance would be nice...
