CJ Routes

Hello all,

I've been googling/mapquesting driving directions from Ottawa to Youngstown, and have a question or two for you Americans, or those Canadians that regularly drive in the US.

In my driving directions, the list refers to some routes which are partial toll roads (Merge onto HWY-137 S , Partial toll road, Entering United States (New York)).  What is  partial toll road?  I mean, I've heard of toll roads, but what is a partial and how does it work??

A partial toll road designation means part of your route on that road is toll, part is not.

So, pretend I am driving down this partial toll road... what charges the toll?  Does it depend what lane I am in?  Or am I going to have to pay or find an alternative route?

It is either entirely a toll road or entirely not. There aren't free lanes and toll lanes concurrently in the same direction
Made up example:

Mile Marker 0 to 100 is a toll road on I-666
Mile Marker 100 to 150 is free on I-666

If you plot a route that goes from mile marker 0 to 150, Google will give you the "partial toll road" description. If you plot a route from mile marker 125 to 150, you won't get any toll road descriptor. If you plot a route from 0 to 50 Google will give you "toll road" descriptor.

Okay.... I wish I knew how to program my google search to avoid tolls or partial toll roads....

Anyway, making good time is important for my back.... assume I would pay these toll fees....

Is a picture of my license taken and a bill sent?  How does it work in the USA?

you have to pay the tolls, unless you have a EZ-pass. but I'm assuming you don't, if your asking

What bridge are you coming over?

My Google Route:

1. Head southeast on CR-44/Prescott St toward Reuben St Continue to follow CR-44 4.4 km 4 mins
2. Turn left to merge onto HWY-416 S 26.4 km 17 mins
3. Take the exit onto HWY-401 W/MacDonald-Cartier Fwy toward Kingston 60.9 km 37 mins
4. Take exit 661 toward I-81/Bridge to U.S.A/Hill Island 1.4 km 4 mins

5. Merge onto HWY-137 S
Partial toll road

Entering United States (New York)
3.9 km 5 mins

6. Continue on I-81 S 153 km 1 hour 30 mins

7. Take exit 25A to merge onto I-90 W
Partial toll road
Passing through Pennsylvania Entering Ohio
441 km 4 hours 18 mins

8. Take exit 228 to merge onto OH-11 S toward Youngstown 78.7 km 46 mins
9. Take the I-80 E exit toward New York 0.7 km
10. Continue straight onto OH-711 S 4.6 km 3 mins
11. Take the exit onto I-680 S 5.1 km 4 mins
12. Take exit 6B to merge onto Market St toward Downtown

Points 5 and 7 are the partial toll roads...

How do I pay the toll? Is there an alternative route that wouldn't add too much more time but would avoid the toll?

How could I configure google to give me directions less the toll routes... I know I can 'avoid highways' with google, but that adds soo much time.
Directions are generic... from Kemptville to Youngstown.

I see where your coming from. (mapquested it) There's really no way to go through NY quickly without going through tolls.
There's 2 sections on the 90 that you have to pay tolls on, that I know about

Your really out there.

The toll to cross over the Thousand Islands bridge into the US is $2.50. There will be a toll plaza several lanes where you can pay the toll. All accept cash/coins, some accept credit cards.

The second toll road is I-90 from Syracuse to just shy of Erie. Rates are here. (You're going from exit 36 to 61). You also pay with cash (someone local on the board can tell you if they take credit) at the toll plazas on I-90. Once on the toll portion of I-90, you can only stop at travel plazas. They have gas, food, and bathrooms.

For enlightned alternative route making, buy an atlas. They have all toll roads marked in green. The Rand McNally website marks toll roads on their internet maps, but it's a bit unwieldy.
