E303 with GT40P Heads March 25, 2008, 08:03:06 PM Now that I have two birds,I want to beef up the 5.0. I have a HO EEC-IV,a E303 Cam,and a GT-40 EXplorer intake. Just wondering if the GT40P'S will cause piston to valve clearance problems. I dont have heads yet but can get GT40P'S or E7'S. I know the 40p's are better just want to make sure they will be OK before I buy a set. Quote Selected
E303 with GT40P Heads Reply #1 – March 25, 2008, 09:08:13 PM I’m assuming you have an E6 bock w/ flattopsAlmost all get lucky w/the E7s I don’t think I heard of anyone having a problem, though some will tell you to still do a piston to valve check. Pretty sure the regular gt40 will have similar results but be more careful bigger valve and I think I herd of one or two lucky people out there. Now as for the gt40p head it has a smaller chamber and I never herd of anyone put them on an E6 motor.SCRATCH SCRATCH SCRATCH SCRATCH SCRATCH SCRATCH SCRATCH I just reread your post your going w/the E303 cam now you just tighten the odds even more. E303 with GT40P Heads Reply #2 – March 25, 2008, 10:03:21 PM I know. I see that there are several people running e303's with e7 heads and a e6 block,so I guess I will go that way. Quote Selected
E303 with GT40P Heads Reply #3 – March 25, 2008, 10:05:31 PM You'll need mass air with that E303... Quote Selected
E303 with GT40P Heads Reply #4 – March 26, 2008, 04:29:30 PM X2.I know first hand about that. Quote Selected
E303 with GT40P Heads Reply #5 – March 26, 2008, 09:20:51 PM I have the pigtail and meter from a 92 5.0 GT. What else do I need to go Mass Air? I found a article on hooking up the meter to the EEC-IV, is that what you did? Quote Selected
E303 with GT40P Heads Reply #6 – March 26, 2008, 10:19:19 PM You need the Mass Air EEC... Most of the time they'll be ID as A9L or A9P... Quote Selected
E303 with GT40P Heads Reply #7 – March 27, 2008, 09:27:34 AM Another computer to search for is an A3M or A3M1. It was a service replacement for the A9L & A9P. They are not as commonly known, so prices are often considerably less (perceived as less desireable). Quote Selected
E303 with GT40P Heads Reply #9 – March 27, 2008, 07:11:03 PM I would say throw the E-303 cam in the trash...or E-bay it to a mustang guy...*IN MY OPINION*, the entire alphabet cam line is junk...Lunati makes a few real nice cams with more exhaust duration...I drove an E-303 equipped 'Stang with headers/T-5 and 3.73's...it had mass-air and still refused to idle when cold...I couldn't even come close to imagining driving with an AOD behind it...definitely suffered on low-end torque...the car was stripped down to around 2700lbs and ran 12.70's on DR's...but wasn't very fun on the street. E303 with GT40P Heads Reply #10 – March 27, 2008, 08:03:45 PM Um,well,I have an AOD and the E303,and the car has some wicked mid-range power, and idles a little "loapy",but is great.I have 3.55 gears. When I floor it from a stop, the tires don't have a chance (255 40 17). Quote Selected
E303 with GT40P Heads Reply #11 – March 27, 2008, 09:03:22 PM My experiene with the E303, fuel injection and a manual trans, was not positive. It surged and stalled quite often. It would also buck at a low (engine) speed in any gear. When it did idle it sounded pretty tough, but what a PITA. When I swapped the long block to another car, it was carburated with an automatic (with a stall converter). Then it was pretty easy to live with. The fuel injection set up may have run better with a custom chip tuned on a dyno. I had a mail order one (specifically listing surging and stalling as the main runablity problem). It helped, but it was still miserable to drive. Quote Selected
E303 with GT40P Heads Reply #12 – March 27, 2008, 10:25:35 PM Most of my reading on the computer is not positive for the E cam. I think I read this on corral which made me laugh they stated there’s only 1 E-cam out there and we keep passing it along to the next guy. Quote Selected
E303 with GT40P Heads Reply #13 – March 27, 2008, 10:30:26 PM Yea alot of people told me to sell the E303. I decided to go with a stock HO cam instead. That way I dont have to find another computer, plus it isn't going to be my race car, I have the 87 for that. Quote Selected
E303 with GT40P Heads Reply #14 – March 28, 2008, 12:06:11 AM I hope you're not using the stock T-bird short block. If you are those pistons are going to bend the valves on the GT40P heads. Quote Selected
