v-6 to v-8 tranny help...

Not sure to put this in under drivertrain or engine swap, but here it is.

I've got an old 87 cougar, v-6 with a aod tranny. I'm just about finished with the new engine in my 87 tbird. The basic idea was to just swap out the transmissions. I never noticed until now, but it looks like they have different types of linkage for the v-6.

The v-8 bird tranny had a camshaft lobe shaped bracket that the linkage attaches to. The v-6 car looks identical exept without it. I'm not sure if it was busted off while we were removing it or not. Me and my wife's dad tried to get the old shaft out that the bracket is on, and we ended up drilling out a pin inside the seal for the tranny pan.

Is there an easy way to adapt the v-8 linkage on to this transmission without removing the shaft? I just don't see how I could possibly swap it out without damaging the transmission...

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

The shaft has a roll pin and a nut on the inside of the case holding it on.Remove the pin (or not if you drilled it out),and back off the nut, then pull the shaft out. That's really about it.

yep, you gotta drop the pan and swap in your original linkages.  Its real easy, just remember to mark your linkages with a dab of white spray paint.  that way you know where to adjust things back cause your parts staying will have a paint mark.
