'88 Cougar XR7 4.6L 3V - update 12/27/2011; Engine, trans and TC rear end in

...I can post in this forum.

19 months I've been looking for an 88 xr7.  I started a map over everywhere I was finding them.  I found 25 white ones for sale across the US in the last year and about 20 black ones.  Only three white ones had 100k miles or less.  Most were 150k miles or more.  Odd.

At least a dozen black ones came up with 100k miles or less.  Two with 20k miles and a bunch with 50-70k miles.  Enough of the trivia.

I actually found this car on Craigslist in Dallas (300 miles from me) in 12/06.  He wanted $1500 but the dash was removed to be recovered.  I tried to go up to see it, but it never worked out.  I kept his contact info.

So we went to Dallas to see family and I saw it, and from advice I got here I offered $300 and he took it.  Some assembly required.

The story is, the owner's brother in law was the original owner.  The car is in good shape but its been sitting for three years (over two of it inside) with the dash out.  150k miles every option except sunroof. Gray unripped leather.  Since he moved it outside, the steering wheel finish melted and the shifter handle is now shot.  Been repainted but needs some overspray cleaned up.  Needs Valve cover gaskets, and possibly another oil drip to address.

Surprise surprise, is started up and we drove it onto the trailer.  I think the IAC is gummed because it takes a couple starts to get going (runs with the throttle blipped).

We were taking the kids to get ice cream tonight and I told my wife, "I can't believe there is a Cougar in my garage."  I'll have to say it is exactly what I wanted, all the way down to the black turbines.

Grut - yeah, I really appreciated your encouragement for patience.  I had to keep remembering that it took me eight months in '90 to find my ^first white one.

c86_89 - T5, some head, I-E manifold, cam combo (or HO engine swap), TC rear.  I dream of the IRS swap, but that ads five lugs, new springs, etc, and I love the turbines, :screwy: I know.  If that's the case, black bullits.  That's the dream, we'll see how that plays out.  Its nice when you can apply money saved for the car towards the upgrades.

I'm going to start with plugs, oil, battery, tires, FI cleaner and clean the IAC, though.  Driveable first...

Told ya so, nice score...

Nobody but a true enthusiast would would buy a car with the dash removed... Most would run away screaming(and probably did), so you got a great deal, if you don't mind doing some work...

That's a very nice score for 300. I would not put that dash back together without a new heater core though. :hick:
