This weeks progress report----------------

Hope everyone had a good Christmas. Mine was wonderful except for my powerbook dying. Must have cooked another logic board.
so updates with pics will be a little slow until i get reorganized on my studio computer, until the powerbook gets fixed (again).

OK --I spent about 3 hrs today going over the frame and checking structural supports. There's a couple places that need a little repairing. very small, nothing that I cant repair In a couple hrs.

removed the back seat upper today (with a little heat. May need a new plastic seat belt retractor cover for one side. it melted a little. it will never be seen.)

Sheet metal is in great shape back there. just a little rusting around the rear wells. easy to fix

everything under the rear end is in good shape. some rust, some undercoating, and even paint. but no holes that I can find.
some of one fuel tank bracket needs replacing but thats the worst of the rear end section. I believe someone mangled it about 10 or 15 years ago when they dropped the tank for replacement. Not a problem, I'll make a new one.

I may install extra bracing and reinforcement metal as I go. Still not sure what I'm planning to do with her. I may just restore her to her former glory and give her an easy life of cruising and showing off. I guess I'll decide as I'm working on it
If the extra reinforcement is in the car, then I guess I don't have to worry If I want to upgrade anything in the future

So the project will continue with my car.
and if 5.0willgo doesn't mind, I'll be using  "PROJECT BEDROCK"  until she gets put back together

And as they say---On with the Show

Make sure you fit everything up at once. The quarter, rocker, clamp them in place and make sure they fit well with each other. Then welding/glue bonding is next. I work in a Body Shop and am going to a Tech school for it. This is all I do anymore is resto. You do nice metal work. Looks like you know what you need and know how to bend and roll metal. Personally I like the idea you had about extending the rockers down to add a "lowered" feel to the car. If I find another fox to play with I might try that. How far were you thinking?

Thanks,
you probably already noticed nothings welded yet. and the other reason the old door is still on is because it's keeping everything lined up.
I've worked with aluminum for 20 years for my job, and have rebuilt a few cars and a van from the bottom up.
I think I may try to bend up a pair of rocker covers when I'm done to give it the lowered look, they could be epoxied on.

If I didn't do what I do now for a living, this is what I'd probably would be doing.
I may even try using lead on this project. --always wanted to.
If you have any modern day tips on restoration send me a line. I'm pretty open about anything

I was thinking just a little something to give it this sort of pulled out effect.
Thats why i'm thinking a cover would be better and would blend better below the wheel flares that we have on our cars.
It would have to go from wheel to wheel

Just to let everyone know, I'm not slackin.

Today started removing misc. items underneath the car. you know, e-brake cables and exhaust and brackets and things. I also sed off the scaled rust under there

I thought it would be pretty lame to post pics of that stuff. so we're pic-less for this post.

just getting things ready to blast. I'll post pic of the progress next time.
I posted some pics of  quarter panel rust here if anyone is interested.
http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?t=17568

I also cleaned up after seeing my garage in that "GARAGE" post last week. I can't believe no one said anything about that mess.

After a month or so of working 7 days a week I decided to do some work.

Here's a pic of lining up the new fender to position the rocker front.
I used a bunch of rare earth magnets, from hard drives that I had laying around from back in my computer and electronic repair shop days

Here's a shot from under the car. Yep, a paint stick makes a real good shim. lol

Here's a shot of the inside rocker, tacked in place

I've been dreading making this piece for months. I guess it's not bad for something that will never be seen again.

As I read through this thread I'm sitting here giggling because I remember so many of these guys telling you it wasn't worth saving.

You are doing fine work. When it's finished you'll know whether it was worth the effort or not. I'm looking forward to seeing the end result at CatJam and everyone drooling over it. :)

I am not going to comment on the rest of Mayhem's post because I MAY have been one of those guys who told you it may not be worth saving. Hey, I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again....

Thanks guys, I do plan on keeping this car forever. Why not, I've had it about 18 years. For some of you guys, thats already forever. lol
Patience is easy when you don't need to use the car for anything.

I know you guys love a good project. Here's todays pics.

In this pic, you can see what I'm doing.
I've cut out the floor between the frame rail to check for rust.
To my surprise, only a little surface rust. I treated all the bare metal and any rust I couldn't get off with Pickelx.
It turns rust into black oxide and protects new metal from rusting until its primed.  (great stuff)
I then coated the inside of the frame rail and any hard to reach places with encapsulator.

Here's the first piece tacked on the floor.
Here's my handy dandy hole punch also. Everything is preped with pickelx. Its also a weld through primer.

Boy did I have a heck of a time tacking this. Reaching around the door jamb and trying to get close enough to see with my helmet fogging. But I did it. And I didn't start the car on fire either. lol

Here's the floor patch tacked. Still needs a little more pounding and forming. It's not pretty yet.
I'll do some more welding as I have time during the week. (mabe)
Everything will be ground down and coated with zero rust, which is what the body shops are using nowadays to seal out moisture from rust.

Here's the cut I'll be making to replace the quarters.
I can't wait to do that. I hate kneeling down to work.
