Great work man!
Only thing i'm wondering is, where did you get a small block c6????
You sure it's not an aod or c4????????
I was pretty sure all c6's had big block bells???
Also make sure when you goto rebuild the SO 5.0L that you use all the HO parts.

Thanks Chris,
I didn't get to jack it up, but the pan is the shape of a C-6, from what I can tell. (square pan with the side notched back in) definately not AOD. also had one in my 78 mercury. I'm pulling it in the garage tomorrow, I'll jack it up and get some pics of what I got for sure.
The motor is going performance all the way around for sure. Like they say, do it right the first time

Yes there were small block c-6s. I had 2 of them. One was in my 1/2 ton 4X4 behind a 302 and the other came from a van with the same engine. Nice and easy to modify for extra torque capacity

Drivers Side Floor Repair

As I said, I'll keep everyone updated this weekend.
Today was a great day to work on the car. The sun was shining, the birds were singing. and there's nothing like the smell of burning metal in the morning. and to top it off, it was 62 degrees today.

I started today with 1 goal. Finish the drivers side floor.

Here's the rear floor on the drivers side. It's looking a little rough.
I had a thought the other day. I would use the floor out of the bird to repair my car. But after I took the carpet out, I found that it was worse then mine. and that car was said to be from California originally.

this is the start of the cut out.

Nothing like feeling that your moving in a backwards direction

Here's my piece for a template

Piece cut out

piece bent to fit

Here's the official dry run pic

and here's the official retpuppies pic

Everything is treated with pickelX. including new metal

the piece tacked in

heres the pic of it done

LUNCH TIME!
MMMMMM PIZZA

Heres the next fix over the E-brake post

repair around the seat bolt

here's the floor all repaired, including the hole where the pan plug used to be.

Here's the floor with a quick grind down. I'm thinking It doesn't have to be 100% perfect. I'm just going to cover it with sound deadener again anyway.

And the finished product. This is the first coat. all the seams will be sealed before the second coat goes on.

Goal Reached!!
I still have to finish welding the front and prime it.
I should be able to finish the passenger side next week. There less to repair on that side. Then its on to the SFCs, seat braces, and jacking rails.
It looks a lot less scary to see a solid floor now. The underside will be blasted and primed, when I do the frame work.

Thats my project for this weekend. Another 5-1/2 hrs. to get added to the time tracking.

TOTAL TIME: 37-1/2 hours

This whole thing is incredible (this is the first time I'd seen the thread since getting high speed). Now I wish I hadn't junked that Turbo Coupe now - it was in much better shape, but the front frame rails were shot...

I think you may be the first one to do an actual restoration to one of these cars like somebody would do to, say, a '65 Mustang. Many of us have repaired 'em and refurbished 'em, but you're actually rebuilding yours. Kudos for saving it...

I'm glad that you can finally get to see the pics. That would have been brutal over dialup.
I may have been the first to restore one of these too. (I was 19) It was worse than my car

yep, 19
I didn't have a MIG so I got my friend to come by and give me a hand with the panels. (most of my friends worked at body shops) It took 2 of us to hold them up also. I think the one side panel was 9 foot long.
I painted the van and painted my 78 mercury the same year.

Just get in there and start working. Thats how you learn.

Yes I'll drink to that alright! I would obviously much prefer to have my dad teaching me everything he was going to....but as it worked out I have his cars instead. :(  But that's really what I have done, between getting the '38 on the road (coughf-inbrakescough) and the H.O. conversion in the cougar I've just kinda done stuff arguably on a whim, without too much advance planning. Mom sure hasn't been happy for probably EVERY project I've taken on (how the HELL do I break it to her...there's NO right way, the reaction is never good never never never :D )...but all have turned out okay *knock on wood*. Sure is good because there's no way I could afford to pay someone to do all I've done.
