So I decided to cut out a little more, because of the rust.

Put it in place and tacked it together.

Also ended up cutting more out of the front too.

Next is to weld the patches before the quarter goes on.

That's all for today. Just getting ready for the panel.

Thanks, Its everyones support that keeps me going.
It really wasn't supposed to be this big of a project when I started, but one thing always leads to another.
Now I'm kinda glad I spent all those years hanging out at car restoration sites. It's really come in handy during all this.

I hope to have the entire body welded on in the next 2 weeks.
Then I'm going to drop the tank and blast the entire ass end and seal/paint it so I can turn it around again and pull the motor.

Im itching to see your eventual perfectionist work of the front strut tower/frame area.  I have a couple of thoughts on how i would handle it since the s yard is not an option, I await more porn shots of this in days or weeks to come.

your use of the magnets is pretty slick there mister, i wont forget it when i need to make  sure two eventually adjoining flat surfaces need to be on the same plane.  How well do the magnets hold up to the effects of the electrical disturbance from welding?  are they getting weaker?

Also, Are you using one of those clamp type spot welders 120/240 in addition to your mig?

Also,, i suppose your drilling out the holes for spare part removeal makes means that you simply fill back in the holes while welding and then grind off the excess slag/metal,, correct? I just happened across one pic that showed the backing plate for a rear qtr and then it all clicked how you were going to attach the new part to the body.  Prior to all that, i thought you were going to seam weld which would put too much heat on such a small guage metal.

Also... when your welding,, are you welding holes full but jumping around as to spread out the heat staying far from the previous spot that was heated?

sorry,, too many question or curiosities.

The front is going to be easy for me, because I have an extra car I can clip the front off of. Both sides if needed.
So far I only see holes in the sheetmetal behind the shock towers which are easy to fix. but we'll see after the motor comes out.

I still need pliers to get the magnets off, so I haven't really noticed them weakening yet.

I'm just using a mig for welding. but plug welding with the help of my hole punch. I'll usually seam weld after the plug weld.

I weld a backing plate where I drill out the welds, and fill the holes in. I tried with out the backing, using a copper plate behind. but it's a pain, and the backing does just as well as long as I seam seal it so moisture doesn't get trapped between the metal.

When I weld the panel on, I skip around while I plug weld the backing strip.
Then I hit the plug welds with a grinder so the magnets sit flush when the panel goes on. then I skip spot weld the panel. It doesn't have to be a solid weld when done. It will be epoxy primed first then filled with waterproof filler.
The backing strip also acts as a heat sink which will be seam sealed on the back side too.

I also use a higher power setting for a shorter time welding sheetmetal (just preference) and 023 wire.
the shorter weld time lets me tack stuff with out wearing a helmet cause it only takes a blink of an eye so to speak. you just need to time it right (and do it a lot)
as long as were on the welder. It's a lincoln 140C gas and gasless with continuous adjustment and also has a cold tip and setup for a spot timer add on. I also use 12 lbs spools of .023 wire for sheetmetal with the argon mix. I also use a miller auto sensing proline helmet. (its real fast).

Questions are never a problem,

No, You didn't jinx it.
Life got a little in the way since I got back from my honeymoon (14 yrs. late).

Spent my usual fall cleaning and storage routine. (closing pool, cleaning carpets, putting away yard stuff, etc)
But I did get some porn shots of some things I've been doing.

I ran out of tool storage room, so sears had a 50% of sale last weekend.
So I bought this for $289. The sale may still be going.

Here's what I've been thinking for brackets and things under the car and inside the engine bay. Let me know what you think. I'm looking for a color to offset the satin black. and the silver Turbines I'm going to put on the car.
I like the hammered metal look.

Also making sure the panel is lining up before I cut and piece the door jamb. Can't just cut it anywhere. these bird parts are stamped a little crisper then the cougar parts. just doing a lot of double checking. it's a one shot deal.

Also put another finished coat on the pass. side and started putting wires back in the correct holes if they're still there. otherwise I have to drill new ones.

And in between it all, I have to make another batch of doors and drawer fronts for our kitchen. 48 more to be exact.

So as of now, this is how she sits until I'm sure of where I'm cutting.

I'm also looking for a set of HO heads that won't cost more to ship then to actually buy.
If anyone is close to Buffalo let me know. E-7s would be fine
