Sweet merciful . Hurricane Noel is currently passing over Nova Scotia, and I was just awakened by a gurgling sound. It turns out the wind is so high it's creating a venturi effect as it passes over the house's sewer vent pipe and has sucked all the water out of every trap in the house. Even the shiznitter's empty!

The storm is technically no longer a hurricane as it lost its tropical characteristics, but it is still packing hurricane force winds (right now, according to my anemometer, winds are sustained at 117 km/hr, gusting to 139 - that's about 75 and 85 MPH for you non-metric folks) and is absolutely frickin' huge - it ain't a hurricane, it's a "superhurricane". The storm is larger than all three maritime provinces, eastern Quebec, and Newfoundland all put together.

It's pitch black because there's no power (I'm typing this on a laptop at 3:39AM local time) so I can't really view the damage, but by the sounds of things banging around out there, there will definitely be some. I already know that the tarp covering my firewood is gone (the wind tossed the six tires including two on rims, two E-350 leaf springs, two E-350 coil springs, an E-350 steering box, and several large chunks of wood I had on top of the tarp holding it down like toys), the green bin and garbage bins have been knocked over, and I can see several broken branches in the large maple next to the house, but that's all I can see with the flashlight. And of course, there's no power.

Gonna be interesting come dawn...

man sounds like your getting creamed we got the edge I live in the middle of long island not bad here sleep threw it. The wife was up she said it wasn’t bad too, my brother had a job a few towns east of were I am and he said wind was bad and hard hard rain and some people I know east of me said it was bad. Pretty strange for a big storm.

That sounds pretty bad - hope the damage is minimal now you've had a chance to go and look. It's calm and sunny here in England - wish I could send our good weather over to you.
Take care, Niki

It is Novemeber now,so,it's nice and sunny here.Should be around the 70's (mid 70's) with very a very light breeze and low humidity.C'mon down here for the winter.I hope everything there is intact and no serious damage occurred.Picking up  and straightening up is better than having to have shingles and cars repaired and replaced.Good luck.

you should be one of us "non-metric folk" as 85<139 there would probably be less damage! :hick:

Maybey THATS why this stupid country is still non-metric

Yeah, we got luck here. Didn't get much rain and the winds only got up to about 30MPH. Did lose the door off the greenhouse, but if you're in the greenhouse and sneeze that think comes off.

Looks like NS and NB got the worst of it.

we had that yesterday, massive rains and wind, transformers and boxes blew everywhere. we lost power for about 2 1/2 hours, the town next to use lost it anywhere from 4 -8 hours!
thank god nothing smashed my car.... almost took the cobras tent for a ride though! Thank god we used 6 2 foot long hold downs on it!

OK, well the verdict is in - I lost an apple tree, several branches off the large maple behind the house, and my tarps covering my firewood - my brand new tarps - were shredded. Which of course resulted in soggy firewood. Thankfully, though, the house, garage, sheds and vehicles sustained no damage.

I'm still without power. I've got the generator running to put some cold back into the freezer, some warm back into the house, some juice back into the laptop battery, and some water back into the tank. I've got ten gallons of gas, plus another two gallons I could drain out of the ATV, and another gallon out of the lawn tractor if need be, plus a full 20-lb tank of propane for the BBQ and a deer in the freezer. I'm prepared for a long blackout, which is  a good thing - Nova Scotia Power's power outage line estimates Tuesday at approximately 11:00PM before power is restored here. Apparently the damage is quite bad all over the province, with over 100,000 houses in the dark and several reports of structural damage to houses and buildings.

I made out much better than my neighbours - the guy across the street had his gazebo turned to splinters, and the guy next to me, a real nutcase who has 8-foot privacy fences and "Video surveillance" signs all over his yard, had all of his fences blow down. I'll post some pics of the damage later.

E-mailed a friend of mine in Newfoundland after I read this earler. She had a pan of dirty diapers blow off her back porch and across her yard that she had to chase down, and that was the worst of her problems.
Well not actually the worst of HER problems, wtf a pan of dirty diapers was doing on her back porch that she had to go chase should tell ya she has MUCH bigger problems than a little hurricane. But the shrink's are going to have to help her with those.

Pics:

#1 shows what's left of the across-the-road neighbour's gazebo (he had two gazebos, but only one was destroyed - you can see the other, the survivor, in the background)
#2 shows the nutcase next door's fence damage - actually it only shows the part of the damage facing my property. It's torn apart along the front face as well
#3 shows the apple tree. Ugly as it was, it was the only one on the lot that actually produced apples. Guess the deer won't have any reason to come into my yard anymore...
