Custom grill

since my 93 coug is the parts car, and the grill would fit my 95 just fine, i'm gonna use the 93 grill to make me a custom mustang-ish grill. :headbang: i cut the slats and emblem out so it's just a shell. then i'm gonna put some black painted wire mesh type stuff in the shell and epoxy the emblem to to the mesh. anybody know where to find something to rechrome the spots that need it? plastic grills suck i wish it was built like my 77 f150

Hobby shop the stuff is called Bare Metal Foil. That can give you chrome, gold, stainless, brushed aluminum.

and what kind of substance is it? foil or liquid? does it go on smooth or look like a pos rattlecan job?

It's a foil,but I really don't think it would suit weather,climate change and overall anythiung else outside.It looks great when applied right.I use it for the chrome trim on my model cars,which is what it was designed for.It costs about $5.00 or per sheet.If it does work,you're ahead,if not,you're only out a few dollars.It's sold at most model car hobby shops.Good luck.

if you think it doesn't like weather then i won't waste my time using it. nothing takes a bigger weather beating than the grill on a car.

although it doesnt say how much paint you are buying, the way this guy talks about it makes it sound like some good stuff.

The problem i see with model kit paints is that they're meant for tiny lumpy things that would not need a uniform finish. i need something that would go on smooth enough that it would cover broader flat areas and still look right. i'm sure it looks good on model car trim but how does it hold up to something full scale? could it cover say... a side mirror and still look right?

You'll be wasting your time and money using those hobby materials on the exterior of your car.  They are formulated to look good in a controlled environment.

If you use the bare metal foil with a clear coat over it I would think it would be fine. That clear is gonna seal it. making it part of the grill as long as the clear is there you should be good. If no clear I would think it would lift off of it with the abuse a grill sees.

Actually, i started thinking it would look better painted sort of a charcoal black to match blackout headlights and the black cavity in the grill, or maybe white to match body color so it would sort of come up from the bumper like the sn95 mustangs.

Got all the slats out and the emblem out. Now i need to sand the inner edges of the frame, add the mesh, then repaint and epoxy the emblem on.

I've been experimenting with Alclad II on HO scale slotcar bodies. Looks pretty  good on them but the parts are small. On a full size grill I don't know how it would hold up or how even it would come out.
 
You can get it at most hobby shops and it comes in a variety of finishes (chrome, aluminum, titanium, stainless, etc.) It needs to be backed by a black "primer" to really come out right. And it's an alcohol based laquer so it's a little difficult to work with and crazes easily.
 
You might try it on some spare parts first and see how it looks. I would also use a durable clearcoat on it when you're done

ok so i spent my lunch time at work sanding the grill to smooth out my cut marks and scuff up the finish for repainting. ironically, the chrome plating on the front stood up really well to an electric sander. that stuff only comes off when you DON'T want it to! next step will be to bondo a few spots.
