They aren't too common.
I almost bought one in Pittsburgh, actually. It was a low-mileage car with the HO 5.0, of course.
There are a few guys on TCCoA who have them, but I've never seen one modified.
I believe they have unique body striping and special "Sport" nomenclature on one of the taillights.

The Sport model was available in 1991 & 1992 and consisted of the following:
  • Handling Suspension
  • P215/65R 15 BSW Tires
  • Cast Aluminum wheels
  • Speed Sensitive Steering
  • 5.0L HO with automatic trans.
  • Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel
  • Tilt & Cruise
  • Performance buttstuffog Instrument Cluster
  • "Sport" Script on left taillamp
  • "V8" badge on fenders
  • Red accent stripe instead of chrome in the moldings & bumpers
  • 3.08 axle ratio

Traction Lock axle was still an option.

I would debate his claims about it out running a Super Coupe though. The Sport's V8 was rated @ 200 hp/275 tq. A Super Coupe is rated @ 210 hp/315 tq and a SC with an automatic came with a 3.27 gear vs. the Sport's 3.08.

At the dealership we had a 1990 SC manual trans. & a 1990 XR-7 automatic. The manual SC beat the XR-7 each time.

Yes, ’89-’90 XR-7’s were the same as a the Super Coupe for those two years.
My reasoning is that from personal experience, the manual trans. Super Coupe was quicker than the automatic equipped XR-7.
Being brand new cars that weren’t sold yet, we didn’t do any hard launches or anything; we just ran them head to head a few times to see which one was faster.

All the MN12 that I have seen have had the HO engine. So what makes this one different from them other than the suspention and the badges?

i concur, the 91 t-bird that i robbed the ho from wasn't even an lx, it was just a plane jane thunderbird.... and had the independent rear suspension (i thought all mn-12 did).... anyway, just wondering too :)

It was mostly an appearance package with some small performance changes.
Some MN12s could be had with all of the cool performance options without having a special package.
For example, my '96 left the factory just as a Cougar with the 4.6 - no Sport package (though it was available).
However, my car has the 4.6, 8.8" rear with 3.27 gears, Traction-Lok, dual exhaust and four-wheel disc.

And, yes, all MN12s had IRS.

But the non SC V6s had 7.5 diffs and drum brakes (at least till 93) standard so they weren't all created equal.  ;)

huh, i went to school with a guy that had one.  the script on the taillight is just a sticker, so i thought it was some cheezy autozone sticker.  looks like i was wrong.

on a side note...  i'd imagine that it would beat the supercoupes... i know that the turbocoupes were faster then the supercoupes, and the turbocoupes really aren't all that fast in stock form.

1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe  8.5 16.3
1989 Ford Thunderbird SC (5 Speed) 6.9 14.9
1990 Ford Thunderbird SC (Auto)      7.4 15.8
1995 Ford Thunderbird SC              7.0 15.2
1996 Ford Thunderbird LX V8          7.9 15.8

0-60 and 1/4 times for each. I would imagine the 5.0 was about the same as the 4.6.

You just cant beat the raw torque of the SC.
