Which Tranny Fluid?

The transmission fluid hasn't been changed in the bird since i got it, I need to do that... But... Which type do i get?
Both haynes and Chilton say the C5 needs "Type H".
I'm only finding "Type F, Mercon And Dexron" around here. :punchballs:
What's the deal?

Dexron III/Mercon are equivalent replacements for Type H.

I'll probably pick this up when i go out later unless someone says otherwise...

I run good ole Type "F", gives a firmer shift as compared to the cushy Dextron/Mercon juice... It's even in the '93 Grand Marquis AODE and has been for almost 100K mi(yes its been changed about every 25/30K mi)...

I'm not saying do as I do, just what has worked for me...

My 84 C5 still has the original type H in it. The shop manual says it has detergent in it.

I just bought mine at Pep Boys.  There is a dealer search on their site.

Mercon III has been surpassed by Mercon V I believe... V is semi-synthetic.

Ahh thanks, 5-6mile drive to the nearest. :wtf:

I picked up some DEXIII/MERC havent put it in yet, I noticed that when i check the level while the car is running, The fluid barely shows up on the stick.
But while it's cooled down, It shows right at the add indicator on the stick.
I think the fluid was last changed in '97 according to some reciepts i got with it, Driven till '99-00 and has been sitting since then, But looks to be leaking.
