Tranny getting ready to puke? part 2 with pic August 08, 2007, 06:17:30 PM Alright started a thread yesterday and got some excellent thoughts ideas and general help so here goes the 2nd part. Its an 87 with a 3.8 to begin. No rain today so started poking around to see what I could see. Removed the air filter hsg and this is what I found. The pics show the linkage and what appears to me to be a missing grommet. I thought I understood the TV cable to be just that, a cable but this is a metal linkage. Would this being unhooked cause me to have no upshift?? Also what is the missing piece and is it available. Thanks in advance for any and all help again. Quote Selected

Tranny getting ready to puke? part 2 with pic Reply #5 – August 08, 2007, 08:41:00 PM Thanks guys. Did the uber cheap fix just to see if it seemed to cure my original problem and it did. If any of you ever roll through western NY look me up I owe you a beer or twelve. If any one knows the grommet part # it would be appreciated as the dealer here is rather small and I usually get the blank stare followed by silence when asking for parts. Also going to change the fluid and filter, is this any special tranny fluid or good ole type F. Thanks again guys from the bottom of my wallet Quote Selected

Tranny getting ready to puke? part 2 with pic Reply #8 – August 09, 2007, 09:39:02 AM This is exactly what was wrong with my LTD. The fix I did was to take a small washer and squash it with vice grips to keep it on there. I think I will regret this when it time to remove it. I wonder how many transmissions were overhauled because of this?Pretty nice that Ford put a part on a engine that heat will destroy.TED Quote Selected
Tranny getting ready to puke? part 2 with pic Reply #9 – August 09, 2007, 10:26:57 AM Well, installed the bushing $2.58 and its just like it always was. Wow I actually came out on top this time a $600 repair that was cured for under 3 bucks. Quote Selected

I say 99% cause at least that many drivers don't have a clue what's happning when the tranny starts to slip... They just rev it up to get it going...The linkage type just caused late/harsh shifts which shouldn't hurt the tranny... They may blow the engine trying to get it to shift...When I became aware of this problem I checked the '92 Grand Marquis we had, grommet fell to peices when I touched it... So that one was saved... A fellow I know that is a good mechanic burned one up in a Tbird cause he didn't check his... Quote Selected
Tranny getting ready to puke? part 2 with pic Reply #11 – August 16, 2007, 10:03:09 AM Well more good news. Changed the fluid and filter and pan was clean. The trans shop was quite impressed given the mileage and everything checked out good. On another note, my cousin works at a large Ford dealer and he sent me a replacement TV bushing which I guess came out in a Ford TSB. It replaces the plastic one. I guess its a metal bushing with a clip that holds it in place. Anyone else ever heard of this one? I should have it today when UPS gets here and can post a pic if anyone is interested, let me know. And it fell into a blackhole or something, So i went to the junkyard and found a replacement clip on an 84 3.8 cougar~Then i found the one i dropped later, heh.Heres a pic of the clips:They fit over the end of the nub after you slide the linkage over it.
