Errors in 87 EVTSM

Some errors I discovered in cassidy's 87 EVTSM.
Page 94 MFS "turn right" switch should be labeled turn left.
Page 95 MFS "turn left" switch should be labeled turn right.
The 84 EVTSM has this same error. It has been propagated forward.

Page 241 shows the correct labeling of the M/F switch.

Page 95 "2.3L Engine Clutch Switch closed with clutch depressed".
Should be shown as normally closed and labled "2.3L Engine Clutch Switch open with clutch depressed.
It is shown correctly on page 207.

Yeah you are right. Here is how it is printed on the book cover:

Electrical &
Vacuum
Trouble-
Shooting
Manual

The "Shooting" is capitalized, but i guess EVTM would be the proper abbreviation.

you'all know what he meant:beatyoass:  sheshhh already.

there are several errors,, none of which really effected me if i needed info cause you can recognize an error when you see one.  I never noticed the 2.3 clutch error though, i dont spend much time in that section.

No, honestly I had no idea.
And not because he had Troubleshooting abbreviated as TS. I would have had no idea what EVTM was either.

Hmmm.. that was "Most Desired for Porting" was it not?
and that would be the M3
Part Number = RF-E6SE-9K461-D2A

Easy to spot from the top by looking for the D2A at the end of the part number located right behind (under) the distributer.

There is another supplier of lower intake to Ford and I still do not know what model cars Ford installed these intakes on from the factory. The casting mark is not on the back driver’s side  like all the others. If you turn these intakes over and look at the bottom of the cooling water crossover passage, you will find an “M 3” or "M 2" cast into the bottom of the passage. See the picture. The part number of this intake is RF-E6SE-9K461-D2A with the D2A indicating this intake. ALCANs and CAEs have D3A and the SACs have D5A. Knowing these numbers can make finding the intakes much easier in the junk yard as the part number is on top the cooling water passage at the front of the intake.

The significance of these various intakes is in their potential for porting. The #1, #5, #2, #3, #6 and #7 runners tend to get thin on the short side (back of the “knee” of the curve) and if you’re not careful, you can break through the casting on the top exposed surface of the runner while porting. So, the more material that is cast into the exposed top of the runner, the less chance you have of breaking through the casting. Of course you can TIG weld a puddle of aluminum in the area to avoid breaking through, but you loose the 100% stock look of the intake. Granted it is not easy to see the welds if you don’t get carried away but it is detectable upon inspection.

If you want the best lower intake to port for a stock intake application, you need to find one of the M3 castings. Their runner cross section at the head  is smaller and more restricted than the other 5.0 lower intakes, but they have much more meat in the casting for porting. This is easily seen when you look at a runner such as the #5 runner where it meets the head . See the picture of a SAC, ALCAN and M3 intake casting.

The SAC intakes have the least amount of material, the ALCAN and CAE have more, and the M 3 intake has the most. The M3 has enough material to produce a 1250 size cross section at the head  without having to weld the top of the runner. It holds potential to produce the best flow un-welded. Happy Hunting!

Here are some photos to the marked M3 intake runners before and then after porting.

HOWEVER....
This info MAY be missing something. It does not refer to the 1983 COBRA Upper and Lower Intakes for the 5.0

I found other info leading me to understand that the 83 Cobra will outflow all but the best aftermarket. And only a cfm or two less than an Explorer intake.

This is what I have decided to use. The Lower in a SAC3 but totally different part number RF-F87E-8K461-BA

Right now I have totally stock 88 5.0 SO

I have the above 1983 (where did you get 98?) Cobra Upper and Lower that I "WILL" be using when I build my MAF H.O.

Right now just in the collecting parts stage. The short block I have (spent very little on it as it came from that 84 Mark VII LSC I parted) turns out NOT to be a HO or a Roller for that matter... not going to use it. SO the Upper/Lower is all I have until after I finish my house or I blow the SO.

from a glance,,,RF-F87E-8K461-BA appears to be.........

F8= 1998
7= Explorer

did i miss something?:hick:

anyone else wanna chime in on this casting number.

Usually a casting number containing an X or a Z indicate a high perfromance application.
